Lewis in his entertaining and enlightening epistolary novel, The Screwtape Letters, written in 1942.

My dear gentledevils,

Humans are not created equal. They vary enormously in their immutable characteristics. Some are smart; some are dumb. Some are ugly; some are beautiful. But most importantly for our cause: some people are easier to turn to darkness than others.

Bargain in the Garden

When the Enemy created Adam and Eve in His image, he endowed them with the free will to choose. But unlike the Enemy, humans are part Flesh and, therefore, limited, fallible, and corruptible. He gave them a choice: Stay blissfully ignorant in the Garden of Eden or eat the fruits of the Tree of Knowledge and bear the lethal consequences.

When Our Father Below appeared to Eve in the Garden of Eden all those eons ago, he made a strong case for why she and Adam should eat the forbidden fruit. It would open their minds and finally unlock their true creative potential. They could invent new things, discover new lands, and create the world in their image.

The Enemy didn’t tell Adam and Eve the whole story. Part of the secret is not hidden in the Tree of Knowledge, but in the choice to be disobedient. You see, being creative requires thinking outside the box, having an open mind, breaking the rules, do things that you are not “supposed” to do.

Creativity is a tiny rebellion against the Enemy. That is what He calls Original Sin.

The Artist

Some humans are endowed with a more rebellious nature than others. They call it “openness to experience” and “open-mindedness.” They quickly grow bored with what exists and require a constant stream of new things to keep their curiosity at bay.

These people often become artists, actors, writers, entrepreneurs, and other creative professions. They often use their creativity to serve the Enemy but are also more easily enticed to be creative about the law and morality.

The ability that gives people the power to produce the greatest works of art and invention also makes them more prone to break the law, rape, pillage, murder, steal, and lie. That’s thinking outside the box too. They can even, out of pure boredom, riot in the streets and destroy a harmonic society to replace it with chaos and anarchy.

Our Best Allies

Oh, I see many devious smirks in the audience today. Many of you have already realized what this means.

But for those of you who haven’t already figured it out: The price of creativity is susceptibility to darkness. The most creative among the humans are also the ones who most easily can be used in the service of Our Father Below. Furthermore, since they are creative geniuses, they are also the most influential. Therefore, they can be used as “super-spreaders” of our message of rebellion against reality.

Although most humans are law-abiding and trapped in the chains of morality, they see the shadow of Our Father Below every time they turn on the TV, read a comic, go to the movies, or listen to a lecturer in the liberal arts at a university.

Our super-spreaders are not many in numbers, but they dominate the culture. My lesson for you today is, therefore, that if you can identify a potential super-spreader, turning him or her to our side will accelerate our victory and extinguish the light of existence once and for all!
