What are the Federalist Papers?

The Federalist Papers are a collection of 85 essays published in various New York newspapers over the course of about ten months, from October 27, 1787, to August 16, 1788. Later, the collection was published as a book, The Federalist. They argued the reasoning behind and mechanics of the new Constitution, the structure of the government, and the defense against potential tyranny.

Who wrote the Federalist Papers?

Alexander Hamilton, who went on to be the first Secretary of the Treasury, wrote 51 of these essays. James Madison, who would later be the fourth president, wrote 29, and John Jay, who became the first chief justice of the Supreme Court, wrote five. Together, they all used the pseudonym “Publius,” making it seem as if there were only one author.

Why were the Federalist Papers written?

At the time they were written, the United States was transitioning from the Articles of Confederation to the Constitution, but not everyone was on board. The Federalist Papers were primarily used to argue for the ratification of the Constitution, with the primary audience being skeptical New York voters. The authors, together as the persona “Publius,” argued for a stronger federal union – but one with checks and balances, as well. They believed that a strong central government was necessary to prevent the nation from falling apart or from falling back under foreign control.

Why are the Federalist Papers important today?

New York ratified the US Constitution on July 26, 1788, fulfilling the original purpose of the Federalist Papers. But that doesn’t mean they’re useless today. The essays grant readers a look behind the curtain and into the thoughts and reasonings of the Founding Fathers. They are today viewed as a leading work of American political theory and a primary resource for understanding the original intent of the men who wrote the Constitution.
