Illegal immigration efforts tighten around Canada, as well.

Texas Enacting Mounted Officers at the Border

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has announced the launch of its Border Mounted Patrol Unit, the first of its kind. The 3E Mounted Horse Patrol class recently graduated from a six-week training and is made up of Texas Highway Patrol Troopers working with their horses to keep an eye on the border and illegal migrants wishing to cross into the Lone Star State.

“This marks a historic moment for the Texas Department of Public Safety as we continue to innovate and strengthen our efforts to protect the people of Texas,” DPS Director Steven McCraw said on the agency’s website. “The launch of the Border Mounted Patrol Unit and the graduation of its inaugural class represents our unwavering commitment to enhancing border security utilizing unique and adaptive strategies.”

The Texas-Mexico border has some challenging terrain, and this new unit will be better equipped to assist in ground control. After their instruction, the mounted officers completed on-the-job training as well, and during that two-week time, they managed to assist in apprehending 11 migrants trying to cross into the state illegally.

Illegal Immigration Efforts Focusing on Canada

The southern border between the US and Mexico has held the spotlight when it comes to migrants crossing into the country illegally, but President-elect Donald Trump said he will turn some of that focus to our northern territory. Why is Canada such a concern?

More suspected terrorists are encountered at the northern border than the southern. At least 358 suspects on the terrorist watch list were detained at the ports of entry between Canada and the US during the 2024 fiscal year, while there were 155 at the southern border, reported the Independent. Furthermore, the border patrol said they believed some of those encountered at the northern border came from Mexico but flew to Canada where, where they don’t need a visa, before crossing illegally into the US.

New Banner - This Week in Open Borders AmericaPlus, more people from East Asia and India have been crossing in the north. Michael Barutciski, a professor of international affairs at Toronto’s York University, told WBZ that “Indian nationals do require a visa to enter Canada but there was apparently a decision by the government to not be as strict in processing the visa applications. For example, no longer asking for proof that the visitor will be returning to their country.”

“It’s actually quite striking that Canada’s immigration minister has admitted that the security screening overseas is unreliable,” he added.

The new border czar, Tom Homan, said earlier this month that the northern border was an “extreme national security vulnerability,” and that this crossing “can’t be a gateway to terrorists coming to the United States.”

On Monday, November 25, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social: “On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders.”

Crime Update

Should illegal immigrants, even if they’ve been in the country for a decade or more, be allowed to own firearms? That is a constitutional right for citizens, and a judge found that the Second Amendment does not apply to migrants in the country illegally, especially when they have more than 100 weapons.

Carlos Serrano-Restrepo was charged earlier this year for possessing firearms while in the country illegally. He tried to get the gun charge dismissed, saying he has a right since he’s been in the US for more than 15 years. A federal judge denied his request, stating he did not have that right.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives started watching Serrano-Restrepo after he purchased 22 firearms. The illegal immigrant also clamed to be a US citizen on the paperwork. When officials searched his home, they collected around 170 firearms plus “tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition and smoke/marine markers,” Fox News reported, which the man claimed were purchased for self-defense.

What will next week bring us in Open Borders America?
