Panic Button for Migrants
With the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump just a few weeks away – and his promise to begin mass deportation on day one – open borders advocates across the nation are scrambling to find ways to impede the incoming administration. But those efforts aren’t just in the US; Mexico is developing a cellphone app that will give migrants a “panic” button if they think they are about to be detained by the immigration department.
Currently, the app is being tested and, as Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs Juan Ramón de la Fuente said, it “appears to be working very well.” He explained it was a sort of “panic” button. “In case you find yourself in a situation where detention is imminent, you push the alert button, and that sends a signal to the nearest consulate.”
Although US authorities are required to give notice to the home country of where the migrants are from whenever they are detained, Mexico is taking it a step further to ensure this happens, including providing more legal aid. The government has also set up a call center that is staffed 24 hours a day.
In a press release, Mexican officials wrote: “The Mexican government, through its consular network in the United States, will defend the human rights of it’s citizens in accordance with international law.”
The “Know Your Rights” program is “aimed at prevention and rapid response to possible enforcement scenarios or rather intimidating actions,” De la Fuente noted.
There has been some concern, although not confirmed, that the new program will be sending legal aid for migrants to the US. “If Mexico is sending hundreds of lawyers to help illegal aliens remain in the U.S., why are we letting them in?” Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) wrote on X.
The program doesn’t just provide the panic button app for migrants, De La Fuente said in the press release, “We are also making extensive efforts to encourage all those with children born in the United States to register them with the consulates. Not everyone has done this yet. We strongly encourage everyone to register with our consulates as this enables us to provide legal protection when needed.”
Biden Ordered to Stop Selling the Border Wall
In 2023, Liberty Nation News reported that President Joe Biden was selling off unused materials meant for the construction of the border wall during Trump’s first term. This was concerning since the money was allocated for that project, yet the administration was quietly selling parts listed on online auction marketplaces such as GovPlanet.com.
Last week, Biden’s administration announced it would stop selling the materials after a court order prevented it from doing so over the next 30 days, which will allow President-elect Trump to come in and use them, according to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
“We have successfully blocked the Biden Administration from disposing of any further border wall materials before President Trump takes office,” he explained. “This follows our major victory forcing Biden to build the wall, and we will hold his Administration accountable for illegally subverting our Nation’s border security until their very last day in power, especially where their actions are clearly motivated by a desire to thwart President-elect Trump’s immigration agenda.”
Furthermore, the Lone Star State’s AG said in a press release that if Biden continues to dispose of wall materials, “it would constitute unethical and sanctionable conduct and officials could be held in contempt of court.”
Trump warned that Biden’s actions will cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. “What they’re doing is really an act, it’s almost a criminal act,” he said. “They know we’re going to use it and if we don’t have it, we’re going to have to rebuild it, and it’ll cost double what it cost years ago, and that’s hundreds of millions of dollars because you’re talking about a lot of, a lot of wall.”
