There was not much in the way of anger and outrage directed at the president by the White House Press Corps regarding the border crisis last week. He was gently queried about unaccompanied minors sitting in not-so-pleasant conditions waiting for Godot. All in all, one could say the establishment media gave the new president a pass for the current crisis on the border. But this is just a blip on the screen compared to what lies ahead as the immigration catastrophe descends into that first circle of Dante’s Hell. One could also label it Border Crisis – Part 2.
It’s All in the Family
By now, most of the nation understands the two deadly sins of a biased media – commission and omission. The latter is in full play as things at the border rapidly unravel. One prominent newspaper dared to write that there has been a “vertiginous increase” in people crossing into the U.S. since Mr. Biden became president. Translation: This is a steep rise in border crossings at a dizzying pace.
So, just what does the so-called mainstream media have to say about this gathering storm? Nary a word on the digital front page of The New York Times morning edition on Monday, March 29. One must scroll and scroll and scroll down on a prominent Washington, D.C. newspaper’s webpage to locate a startling story about yet another wave of humanity headed straight for the U.S. It reports, “Department of Homeland Security officials are privately warning about what they see as the next phase of a migration surge that could be the largest in two decades, driven by a much greater number of families.” The Washington newspaper uses Department of Homeland Security data to tease out the numbers. The bottom line: “500,000 to 800,000 migrants” will be coming “as part of a family group during the 2021 fiscal year that ends in September, a quantity that would equal or exceed the record numbers who entered in 2019.”
Why are these families rushing to the border at break-neck speed? Mexico claims it cannot accept any more families because it has run out of room. But here is the kicker, according to the D.C. newspaper:
“Although the Biden administration says its policy is to ‘expel’ families to Mexico under a pandemic health order, the most recent CBP data shows that only about 10 to 20 percent are being turned back. The rest are typically released into the United States with a notice to appear in court, even though Biden told reporters last week that the families “‘should all be going back.'”
It is not just Biden-friendly establishment newspapers sounding the alarm. As reported in Liberty Nation’s Daily Briefing, “For the second time, Texas Representative Henry Cuellar (D) has shared photographs from inside illegal alien detention facilities on the southern border. The pictures show border-crossers – including small children – held in horrendously overcrowded facilities as they await processing.” Cuellar – keep in mind he is a Democrat – went on CBS News’ Face the Nation with pictures that tell the story.
The photos of an estimated 18,000 children (CBS’ numbers) show kids with foil blankets sitting on the floor in chaotic conditions. Also depicted in these exclusive photos are dozens of mask-clad young girls who have been held for longer than the limit – which is 72 hours.
Where will they go, what is their status, and what is being done, queries CBS hostess Margaret Brennan. Cuellar’s answer is a jumble of statistics and scrambling government agencies. In the final analysis, the Texas Democrat maintains that 65% of kids taking up space in a holding facility at the Rio Grande are unaccompanied. If we believe the Washington newspaper’s projection – that number is about to be replaced by families.
All this circles us back to Dante’s first circle of Hell. How long can we as a nation continue to put tens of thousands of people in limbo? It is a subject worthy of outrage and anger. It should be front-page news. Worse still is the reality that hundreds are quietly being released into the country and unlikely to appear in court. Such as it is, someone might want to awaken the new president from his slumber and inform him that his welcoming attitude and words have begun an avalanche of humanity at the U.S.-Mexican border — and it is high time he dealt with it.
