Trump v Biden: The Truman Show Election

One of Jim Carrey’s most innovative movies is the 1998 classic The Truman Show. The 2020 election is starting to have an eerie resemblance to the story arc of that film, with the average voter playing the role of Truman.

If you haven’t watched the movie, beware: spoilers ahead. Truman Burbank believes he is a regular guy living an ordinary life. Unbeknownst to him, however, he is the star of a reality show watched by millions of people. He lives in a media-constructed reality where everything that happens to him is a script played out by paid actors. As the movie progresses, Truman begins to suspect that he lives in an information bubble of a fake reality. Since the show’s existence depends on his ignorance, the show’s creators try to fix the problem by creating ever more crazy fake news to cover up the shenanigan. In the ecstatic end scene, Truman sails across the ocean and is hit by massive storms by the creator to stop him from escaping his media bubble. But don’t worry; it ends well.

The Media Bubble

Many Liberty Nation readers may identify themselves with the viewers that are not trapped inside Truman’s media misinformation bubble. The average voter who only follows the mainstream media is like Truman – blissfully ignorant that the sinister media forces are manipulating them. A typical Truman voter believes that President Donald Trump colluded with Russia. They are unaware that Hillary Clinton colluded with the Obama-administration, FBI, and CIA to undermine a legal democratic election. The Truman voters believe that Trump called white nationalists and neo-Nazis in Charlottesville “very fine people,” when, in fact, he said the opposite: “They should be condemned totally.” They also believe that Trump advised people to drink bleach to treat the coronavirus, and they have never heard about the numerous peace treaties that he has facilitated in the Middle East. If they have heard about the Biden email scandal, which links former Vice President Joe Biden to corruption in Ukraine and China, they have been told that it is “Russian misinformation.” They have also been told that the United States is “systemically racist,” when the truth is that it is among the least racist countries in the world.

A Classic Movie Ending?

A typical Truman voter also believes that Biden is far ahead in the polls and that Trump has a low re-election chance. However, just like in The Truman Show, many ordinary people are waking up to the fact that they are being assigned their opinions by the media and are now trying to fight their way out of the misinformation bubble. The media manipulators are fighting back, doing their best to make any story about the Biden emails disappear and to cover for the former vice president’s cognitive decline.
