Baseball fans scrambled to evacuate Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. on Saturday evening after shots were fired outside the stadium. Police say three people – at least one of them a bystander – were injured during a shootout between the occupants of two vehicles. The motive for the shooting is not known, but police say neither players nor fans at the game between the Washington Nationals and the San Diego Padres were in danger.
The Metropolitan Police Department’s Ashan Benedict said in a statement, “At no time during this incident were individuals inside the stadium attending the game in any type of danger.” Benedict, who is the MPD’s executive assistant police chief, added, “This was not an active shooter incident.” The injured bystander is expected to recover.
The two vehicles involved in the confrontation left the scene but police later found one of them and are questioning the two occupants. The game has been scheduled to resume on Sunday afternoon.
