Locked in our homes with nothing but the hysterical leftist media to guide us, Americans have a good deal of time to reflect on the Coronavirus “crisis” at hand. As we take stock of where we are and how we got here, one name repeatedly pops up as a culpable character in this unholy mess: Dr. Anthony Fauci. There are more than a few people with an incipient suspicion that Fauci may have taken the president – and this country – for a ride. Thus, it’s worth asking if we the people have succumbed to the Great Fauci Fake-Out by shutting down America for something akin to the seasonal flu? It’s a relevant question and we should carefully examine the current situation for the future because another type of coronavirus could very well happen again.
During this “pandemic” the Coronavirus task force has offered graphs and statistical data to the American public. Much of it has been frightening. And now it appears that much of it has been in error. Fauci has been the primary mouthpiece for this information and as such bears the responsibility for our current situation. He needs to be held accountable for his words and we would do well to review them as he quietly goes about revising the data and to put it bluntly – back-tracking. How so?
Not So Fatal, After All?
Flying under the radar (perhaps for future derriere covering), Fauci said – and Liberty Nation reported the good doctor as stating, “… the overall clinical consequences of COVID-19 may ultimately be more akin to those of severe seasonal influenza (which has a case fatality rate of approximately 0.1%) or a pandemic influenza (similar to those in 1957 and 1968) rather than a disease similar to SARS or MERS, which have had case fatality rates of 9 to 10% and 36%, respectively.”
Just where did Dr. Fauci make this rather surprising statement? Why, in his March 26, 2020, article written for The New England Journal of Medicine. If he believed this 0.1% fatality number to be relatively accurate, then what follows in all the press conferences that the American people have been Krazy Glued to amounts to little more than a head fake of the highest order.
We stipulate that the modeling, the bending of the most famous curve in American history, and the daily projections may have been difficult to determine because the original data came from non-trusted sources like China. But virtually closing down the U.S. economy by strongly urging Americans to barricade themselves in their homes should have been – at the very least – the product of vigorous research, solid evidence, and circumspect advice.
Fake It ‘til You Make It
Media outlets like Liberty Nation, which have no pony in the race to destroy the U.S. economy or the president, have been questioning this Armageddon approach to COVID-19. Just last week, we published the following: “This new death rate – that of 60K – would put the Coronavirus mortality rate in the same league with a nasty seasonal flu year. Thus, we are left to wonder: Have Americans been living A Big Lie?” Now, Democrats seek to put the president on trial for the COVID-19 morass and this health “crisis” will likely become another political football.
Leading Democrats have been talking a blue streak about the president’s lack of response to the Coronavirus crisis. On March 29, 2020, in an interview with Jake Tapper for State of the Union, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) drew a comparison with Roman Emperor Nero when she asserted, “As the president fiddles, people are dying.” Pelosi also invoked the Watergate scandal – specifically the famous question posed by Sen. Howard Baker (R-TN): “What did the president know and when did he know it?”
Dr. Fauci could have stepped up to the plate to quell the critics and arrest the panic by clearly delineating that the virus is not panning out to be all his team imagined in their doom-and-gloom projections. Instead, it’s been a daily diet of the good doctor and his task force cohorts patting themselves on the back: “What we are doing is working.” That might be the case, but it also may be that they overreacted, got it wrong and worked the nation into an unnecessary frenzy.
Are we likely to see more self-congratulatory behavior from Fauci? There is that distinct possibility. All smug and self-satisfied, Dr. Fauci is likely to indicate that it was his prescient directives that held back the COVID-19 tsunami. But COVID-19 is no tsunami; it’s not even a tidal wave. And let’s not forget that is exactly what Fauci was asserting when he spoke of 100,000-240,000 U.S. deaths from COVID-19. Now that we have gone so far down this road toward what could fuel a recession or worse, there is no turning back. However, we could mitigate the damage by calling this “crisis” what it is – something on the order of the seasonal flu.
Politicians, health officials, and Dr. Anthony Fauci would be better off admitting that they may have gotten it wrong. Humility instead of hubris would go a long way with the American people. Fauci and his colleagues would do well to learn from their mistakes. And we the people should be very wary of future Faucis. Perhaps the post-9/11 phrase America used would fit here as well:
