Shutting Down the Border – Can Trump Pull It Off?

"We will close it for a long time. I am not kidding around," Trump warned about the southern border.

President Trump announced on March 29 that he plans to close the U.S.-Mexico border, or at least large sections of it, by next week if our southern neighbor doesn’t stop all illegal migrants from crossing into the states. The president warned that this could halt trade, as well. “We will close it for a long time. I am not kidding around,” he said.

In a flurry of tweets, Trump blamed the Democrats for aiding the immigrants and accused Mexico of not doing enough to halt the massive influx of illegals.

In October 2018, Liberty Nation’s James Fite covered the big win for Trump (and all Americans) after Mexico agreed to increase its security along the border and sort out those trying to cross illegally. Fite wrote: “Now anyone who gets past the Mexican authorities can be sent back for them to sort out. That’s the big win – It’s finally Mexico’s turn to deal with the problem.” But that victory was short-lived.

The hordes of migrants marching towards our border is increasing to epidemic levels. “In 28 days, more than 76,000 people were caught breaching the boundary between nations. That pace, if sustained, could reach the million mark by year’s end,” LN’s Sarah Cowgill wrote.

Approximately 15,000 parents and 40,000 children in family units will ask for asylum, just in the month of March alone. This doesn’t even begin to tally the enormous surge of those who will try to sneak in, stay illegally on expired visas, or the others smuggled in. The mammoth toll on border patrol agents is excruciating and more enforcement officers are desperately needed. Even though the U.S. Customs and Border Protection is reassigning 750 inspectors to help with arrivals in between ports of entry, it is not enough to combat the flood of illegals threatening our borders.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said, “We face a system-wide meltdown… We are witnessing the real-time dissolution of the immigration system.”

Border Commissioner Kevin McAleenan provided some frightening statistics. “The March inflow alone will include roughly 15,000 parents and 40,000 children in ‘family units’ who will ask for asylum — and then will be released — plus roughly 35,000 single adults who will try to evade border officers,” he said. McAleenan blamed Congress and legal loopholes:

“The increase in family units is a direct response to the vulnerabilities in our legal frameworks where migrants and smugglers know that they will be released and be allowed to stay in the U.S. indefinitely pending immigration proceedings that could be many years out. This is due to court orders that undermine the integrity of our immigration system. There is no questioning [about] why this is happening.”

Trump threatened to close the southern border in December 2018 during the government shutdown if Dems didn’t agree to build the wall. At that time, he lambasted Mexico and the money the U.S. loses in trade with them. Now, with migrants rushing our borders, increased human trafficking, the rise in infectious diseases, skyrocketing crimes committed by illegal immigrants, and severe financial strain to our economy, the president has stomped his royal foot upon the ground. Enough is enough. Build the wall or else. Stop illegals from crossing into our country, or else.
