One would have thought that if Democrats are confident about a blue wave in November, they would not spend time claiming President Donald Trump, Republicans, or Elon Musk will “steal” the midterm elections. Yet there have been many such claims and insinuations made by elected Democrats and their media supporters. Since the 2020 election, in fact, Democrats have portrayed themselves as the guardians of election integrity. They simultaneously sow distrust in US elections among American voters and claim the president and the GOP are doing just that.

File this one under Holy Irony, Batman! The Washington Post on Oct. 27 published an article under the headline “How Trump and his allies are sowing doubt ahead of the midterms.” The opening paragraph reads:

“President Donald Trump and his allies have spent the final weeks before the midterms showering his supporters with a relentless stream of doubt about the legitimacy of the election, priming them to question results if Republicans lose.”

The rest of the article comprises debatable claims about how “right-wing” organizations and activists are preparing voters for Democrat electoral successes that will be achieved, apparently, through various ballot-rigging schemes. Meanwhile, a selection of recent left-wing media headlines:

The Atlantic, Oct. 27 – The Limits of Trump’s Midterm Trickery.
The Guardian, Sept. 29 – How Senate Democrats can stop Trump from stealing the midterms.
Democracy Docket, Aug. 6 – How could Trump rig the midterms?
Vox, Feb. 9 – Trump has a plan to steal the midterms. It will probably fail.
Politico, June 11 – How Senate Democrats are planning to push back on potential election interference.

Why the Election Integrity Concerns?

Certainly, it is true that President Trump and many of his supporters and associates have warned that election integrity is under threat ever since the infamous 2020 election. However, there is some important context. Over the past six years, only a couple of instances of electoral fraud or attempted electoral fraud benefiting Republicans have made it to the so-called mainstream media. And, bearing in mind that maybe 75% – at least – of “mainstream” media outlets range from center-left to extreme progressive, it’s a sure bet that any and every example of Republicans engaging in some scheme to rig an election would have made prime-time news.

Conversely, it takes little digging to find a plethora of cases in which various dishonest parties tried to rig elections on behalf of Democrats. Worth noting is that election-rigging does not mean only submitting or counting ineligible ballots; it also includes intentionally deceiving voters with false information about a candidate.

One can go back to the 2016 election and claims that Trump was “colluding” with the Russians to steal the election. That unsubstantiated allegation, which led to an FBI and then special counsel investigation of a sitting president, dealt a huge blow to the noble goal of election integrity. Trump supporters and the wider conservative/Republican movement were hit with the realization that Democrats were prepared to do whatever it takes to win elections.

It’s also worth noting that certain voices on the left claim, to this day, that Trump stole the 2016 election.

Then there’s the ongoing battle over absentee and mail-in ballots. Absentee ballots have always been acceptable for those who legitimately are unable to get to the polling station – such as military and diplomatic personnel serving overseas. Suddenly, though, in 2020, mail-in ballots became a big thing. No rational person can argue that mailing ballots to voters and allowing them to return those by mail is not an arrangement ripe for rampant fraud.

The acceptance of mail-in voting, though strongly promoted by Democrats, has also been prevalent in red states such as Florida, Georgia, and Ohio.

Several Democrat-controlled states have fought tooth and nail to prevent their voter rolls from being purged of ineligible voters. They have even refused to allow their rolls to be inspected. This alone leaves little doubt that they have no real interest in election integrity. In fairness, though, the Justice Department also took action against a couple of red states that were loath to clean up their voter rolls.

The Infamous Election of 2020

And, of course, there’s the 2020 election. Even among conservative circles, oddly enough, it is practically a hanging offense to suggest the 2020 presidential election was rigged. Everyone is expected to forget about the polling stations in the counties that were going to decide the outcome mysteriously pausing their ballot counts in the dead of night. And there is so much more about 2020 that did not pass the sniff test. More than anything else, there’s the fact that the guy who couldn’t make it past the Iowa caucuses, because he got less than 1% of Democrat delegates in his previous White House run, inexplicably in 2020 got more votes – by a wide margin – than any other presidential candidate in history.

That one fact alone overshadows any argument, even from the most rational political expert, that the 2020 election was untainted. It’s an electoral and mathematical anomaly of staggering proportions.

Of course, it must be said that it is practically impossible to definitively prove the 2020 election was stolen. It is equally impossible to prove it was not stolen.

Additionally, there’s the ever-mounting number of cases of noncitizens, dead people, and people who have moved to other states being registered to vote. There is barely enough room on the internet to recount the details of every such case – and those are the only ones uncovered so far.

Since the 2024 election, plenty of people on the left have claimed Kamala Harris was the rightful victor and that President Trump somehow cheated, though none have presented a shred of credible evidence to support those allegations.

The Alaska Sullivans

Most recently, there’s the Alaska saga. Republican Senator Dan Sullivan finds himself up against Democrat challenger Mary Peltola and another Dan Sullivan, a former registered Republican running as "undeclared." The New York Times has reported that Democrat operatives discussed recruiting the other Dan Sullivan to run as a spoiler candidate.

From Liberty Nation News, Trivia, Facts, Check Us Out Stay informed. Today’s news, the Constitution and American history, written for young readers. Visit GenerationLiberty.com

“In the summer of 2025,” the newspaper reports, “a staffer for Mary Peltola, the Alaska Democrat who was eyeing a run for Senate, received unusual instructions from top campaign aides: Find as many people named Dan Sullivan in Alaska as you can.”

The point of all this is that left-wing media outlets are accusing Republicans of sowing election integrity doubts in the minds of American voters. Maybe they are not wrong, but there should be a couple of caveats. First, Democrats have been doing the very same thing since the 2000 Bush-Gore election. Second, Republicans – unlike Democrats – have a mountain of reasons to doubt the integrity of American elections.

President Trump has implied on several occasions that Democrats will rig the midterms. Perhaps that’s because, in his mind – and in the minds of many of his supporters – it’s happened before. But why are Democrats suggesting Trump might fix the midterms? There is really no way he can. Maybe people on the left are alleging this because they fear the resounding Democrat victory predicted so often may not materialize.

4 Questions

The story, in brief

1Why are Democrats warning Donald Trump could steal the midterm elections?

The piece says elected Democrats and supportive media outlets have repeatedly suggested Donald Trump, Republicans, or Elon Musk could steal the midterms. It argues those warnings come even as Democrats present themselves as guardians of election integrity. It also suggests some on the left may be hedging because the predicted Democratic wave may not materialize.

2What examples does the piece give of Democrats sowing election distrust?

It cites left-leaning headlines from outlets including The Atlantic, The Guardian, Democracy Docket, Vox, and Politico about Trump stealing, rigging, or interfering in the midterms. It also points to lingering claims that Trump stole the 2016 election and later allegations that Kamala Harris was the rightful 2024 winner without credible evidence presented.

3How does the piece explain Republican doubts about election integrity?

It says Republican concerns stem from years of disputed election issues, including the Russia collusion narrative, fights over mail-in ballots, resistance to purging ineligible voters from voter rolls, and unanswered suspicions surrounding the 2020 election. The piece adds that cases involving noncitizens, dead people, and voters who moved remain part of those concerns.

4What is the Alaska Dan Sullivan spoiler candidate controversy?

The piece says The New York Times reported that Democratic operatives discussed recruiting another Dan Sullivan to run in Alaska as a spoiler candidate. According to that report, a staffer for Mary Peltola was told by top campaign aides in the summer of 2025 to find as many people named Dan Sullivan in Alaska as possible. The race involves Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, Democrat Mary Peltola, and an independent candidate also named Dan Sullivan.
