It’s another perfectly normal day in the Swamp, where the revolving door apparently needs a new motor, and Donald Trump has once again run out of patience with Volodymyr Zelensky. Press Secretary Zacharia is headed for the well-lit exit, presumably in search of a job where the daily briefing doesn’t require a helmet, while Trump is giving the Ukrainian president another public tongue-lashing. The heartland is tired of all of Eastern European wars, and Zelensky, who has apparently mistaken American taxpayers for a permanent line of credit, continues to discover that Trump is considerably less impressed with his dramedy routines than the previous president enjoyed.
But It’s Hard
The toughest job in politics, whether for mayor of a small town or the president of the US: press secretary. The press hates you, and they are mean. Your boss is behind the curtain, changing his statements and stances on issues and never getting the numbers straight. But come on: Katie Zacharia only lasted five days. Even Anthony Scaramucci had a full 10-day run.
Katie’s excuses were heartbreaking. She had to wake up at “3 in the morning” on day one and did not have “ample” time to prepare. “And I never had a full briefing beforehand, and I went out, and I effectuated the briefing," she said. Well, that is the job. It’s smiling through constant chaos, being able to pivot, and for gosh sake, at least watch the news if you don’t read the briefing.
In Louisiana, David Wisser could feel the pain in his swamp: “I tried that excuse in the ninth grade after giving a book report on a book I hadn’t read, and it didn’t work for me either.”
Zacharia was on the receiving end of resume-fudging interrogations. Did she pass the bar? Did she fail? Where does she have her extensions done?
The president claimed that host Sean Hannity “was a little bit tough” on Zacharia in an interview when the Trump ally pressed Zacharia on her legal credentials. Trump also pointed to “Fox & Friends” for being “a little tough.”
“She’s been treated, I would say, pretty nastily,” Trump said.
The heartland appreciates a tough broad whether pulling calves or facing down the media in the press briefing arena, but Zacharia did not impress. Some wondered whether the White House should just do a round-robin briefing and grab whoever is still hanging around the West Wing.
In South Carolina, Jeff Miller wanted to be helpful: “I hear Maria Bartiromo is available?”
Little River, SC, Fonda Wolfe also had something to say: “Time for a strong no nonsense male with a good grasp of Constitutional law to take on a hostile press. Somebody who can put them in their place with facts and truth, like the mighty Marco!”
Georgia weighed in, showing frustration, and Stockton Trotman got a bit snarky, saying, “At this point let’s put Jessica Rabbit up there.”
Better and maybe the best idea came from Missouri and Lawrence Bane, who simply said: “Beth Dutton.”
Dear Trump, Be Less Talky
Donald Trump is mad at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky again, and now everyone knows it. The only thing more predictable than Russia refusing to behave is Trump losing patience with the guy whose country Russia invaded. Zelensky has the rather inconvenient habit of insisting that Ukraine should remain Ukrainian but needs the US debit card, while Trump seems increasingly irritated that ending a war is complicated. “If you tell me that Zelensky is again shooting at refineries, all he’s doing is making the world oil price higher,” the president shared with Newsmax host Rob Finnerty. “I think that’s a disgrace. There’s plenty of other targets.”

Okay, and that was a great place to stop the discussion. But that didn’t happen. Trump also described Zelensky as “not a good guy for us to deal with.” Is it time to grab the shorter Eastern European leaders by the lapels – and hoodie – and lock the door to the Red Room until there is a ceasefire and compromise? This kind of diplomacy isn’t working off the playground anymore.
Dog sitter, dog walker, and ballroom dance aficionado Eric S. Blair Robles of South Carolina had to talk too: “Rooting for the Ukraine and Zelensky.”
In Willmar, MN, Ross Livingood offered: “It’s almost like Zelensky is more worried about their war with Russia than our midterms.”
ICYMI – Sage Remarks From the In-Zone
When you don’t see it coming, a few of the political kind can land a zinger or two.
Sen. Tim Scott: “The Democrats’ Senate candidates are wrought with problems, from alignments with the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) to cousin problems.” If you know, you know.
“Free speech, how else would we know who the idiots are?” That one’s from Sen. John Kennedy of Louisiana.
Between another departure and another diplomatic dustup, the exhausted political class is clutching its pearls so tightly you can practically hear the strands snapping.
