On Tuesday morning, July 2, prosecutors in Manhattan agreed to delay the scheduled sentencing of former President Donald Trump in the 34 felonies he was found guilty of in May. While the final decision on whether a delay can happen comes down to Judge Juan Merchan, with both the prosecution and Trump’s lawyers asking for a hold, it appears unlikely such a request would be refused.
This request comes in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling Monday, July 1, that former presidents enjoy a level of immunity for official acts taken during their time in office. Trump’s defense team appears to be using this ruling to argue that statements that were used against the former president
should now be seen through the lens of this Court decision – which could make evidence that was entered in the so-called “hush money” case impermissible.
Joshua Steinglass, an assistant district attorney who tried the case, wrote:
“Although we believe defendant’s arguments to be without merit, we do not oppose his request for leave to file and his putative request to adjourn sentencing pending determination of his motion.”
