On Tuesday, September 3, the San Francisco Board of Administrators approved a resolution designating the National Rifle Association a terrorist organization. The vote was unanimous. You can be an illegal alien with a criminal history who had been previously deported five times and still get away with shooting dead an innocent young lady. If you are a law-abiding member of the NRA, though, you are now – in the eyes of the petty bureaucrats who “administer” San Francisco – a terrorist.
The NRA responded by pointing to the abysmal failure of the city’s administrators. San Francisco has, in effect, become the most expensive third-world city on Earth. Rapidly worsening social problems, corruption, and outrageously high rents are the things for which this once beautiful city is now most famous. As Zula Jones, a former official on the city’s Human Rights Commission, once told an undercover FBI agent, “You pay to play here. We’re the best at the game.” Zula is one of three former city officials currently facing charges related to bribery and money laundering.
“This ludicrous stunt by the Board of Supervisors,” said NRA spokeswoman Amy Hunter, “is an effort to distract from the real problems facing San Francisco, such as rampant homelessness, drug abuse, and skyrocketing petty crime.”
Perhaps the city’s bureaucrats should spend a little time dealing with the human feces problem or figuring out why almost 40% of San Francisco’s suspiciously small black population is living below the poverty line.
Leftist Tyranny on Full Display
It should be noted that a resolution is not a law and has no real effect upon anything – this example was nothing more than an act of petulance on the part of the city’s elitist feudal overlords. It is indicative of a disturbing trend on the extreme left, though: Firstly, it is worth pointing out that the classification of political enemies as “terrorists” is a tactic long favored by tyrants and other dictatorships. Perhaps worse, though, is the blatant disregard for the rule of law and due process.
In deciding to label the NRA a terrorist organization, the San Francisco administrators are accusing all the group’s members of terrorism – including the 36% who are registered Democrats. This is the modern left: You are branded a criminal for exercising your constitutional rights. The San Francisco resolution goes as far as accusing the nation’s leading gun-rights group of promoting “extremist positions” and of using its “considerable wealth and organizational strength to promote gun ownership and incite gun owners to acts of violence.”
Make no mistake: The left – and, indeed, a large number of prominent Democratic Party politicians – considers defense of the 2nd Amendment an extremist position. It would be quite wrong to assume that this resolution is an outlier and not reflective of the Democratic Party’s platform. Several of the most prominent 2020 contenders are now openly admitting that they intend to confiscate firearms from law-abiding Americans – something that, until recently, Democrats have always vehemently denied.
Most of the proposals by Democrat presidential hopefuls involve gun “buy-back” programs but this term is pure deception. The federal government does not sell firearms to private citizens and cannot, therefore, buy them back. Gun buy-back means confiscation. The fact that the government might pay gun-owners a couple of hundred dollars after taking away their guns is nothing more than a transparent ploy to make it appear a legal and mutually agreed-upon transaction.
Whether one supports or opposes the right of American citizens to own and carry guns, one should consider the left’s assault upon the 2nd Amendment a test case: If private citizens can be stripped of one constitutional right in the name of “the common good” then every other right is equally vulnerable to denial.
