Should Modern Child Care Exist?

Prioritize the family for the sake of liberty.

Modern America has failed young families. A nation that once thrived on single-income households has devolved into a two-income nightmare, forcing mothers and fathers to spend most of their working lives away from their children. They often rely on institutional childcare just to survive.

As Liberty Nation News previously reported, YouTuber Nick Shirley’s recent viral video uncovering “potential fraud involving Somali-run childcare centers in Minnesota” sparked nationwide outrage: the centers allegedly stole millions in taxpayer dollars.

American families already shoulder enormous childcare costs, spending between 8.9% and 16.0% of their median income on full-day care for just one child, according to the most recent data from the US Department of Labor. In 2022 alone, annual childcare prices ranged from $6,552 to $15,600.

Now, those same families that are sacrificing precious time with their kids to make ends meet may also be funding allegedly fake Somali-run childcare facilities. Struggling Americans are paying for childcare twice, and one of them may not even be real. Talk about gut-punch.

At the end of the day, American families shouldn’t have to worry about their taxes being funneled to fake Somali-run operations because childcare as we know it shouldn’t exist in the first place.

The Brutal Reality of Child Care

For many hard-working mothers and fathers out there, this might be a hard pill to swallow: extensive child care risks include an insecure infant-mother attachment relationship, lower social competence, higher externalizing problems, more adult-child conflict, and more negative peer play, according to the National Institute of Child Health and Development (NICHD) Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development, which followed 1,300 children from birth to age 15. Another research team then followed the subjects into adulthood.

The study also found the quality of childcare centers, from supportive staff to cognitive stimulation, didn’t make a difference, and the negative outcomes remained even when controlling for maternal education, maternal depression, infant temperament, family income, and ethnic group.

Additional research found extensive childcare predicts a host of negative outcomes into adulthood, including greater impulsivity, risk-taking, and contact with police.

“Obviously, some parents need to use day care, whereas others desire to do so. But all parents should be clearly informed about what has been discovered about the effects of childcare in the United States,” researchers at the Institute for Family Studies wrote. “Too many readers of the popular press will miss the critical distinction between studies that examine the effects of short-term increases or decreases in time spent in childcare on development, and research that treats childcare in a more life-span perspective, focusing on ‘early, extensive and continuous care.’”

Secure Family, Secure Liberty

Deep down, everyone knows it’s wrong to separate young children from their families for hours every day. It runs against our most basic instincts. The research merely confirms what parents have long felt but are forced to suppress.

The modern childcare disaster exists because the US prioritized the economy over the family. Then, as inflation and the cost-of-living soared, the government stepped in to offset some of the burden. And as expected, the government’s role continued to expand until the childcare system became so bloated that potentially millions in fraud went undetected.

By handing the family over to childcare “professionals” and the government, America has betrayed the principle of liberty. The United States needs to get children back in the care of their families. Keep the family unit together by eliminating the income tax for families that have one parent stay home to raise the children.

When families are united and attachments are strong, the need for massive, taxpayer-funded childcare systems disappears. And when those systems shrink, so does the fraud. Undermine the family, and liberty collapses. Secure the family, and liberty thrives.
