Twitter has never been a social media site favorable to conservative voices. Despite overwhelming evidence demonstrating Twitter’s bias and censorship against right-wing viewpoints over the last four years, many users insist that Twitter continues to play defense for right-wing bigots, racists, and misogynists. Nothing could be further from the truth, and the largely left-leaning mob typically only plays this card when they lose control over the narrative on social media.
This week, the Twitter mob exploded at announcements that tweets wishing or hoping for death, bodily harm, or fatal disease are against the platform’s terms of service and would be removed. The far left’s favorite political celebrities, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), all dared to complain about the action, attacking Twitter for protecting the president and not themselves. This accusation rings untrue, as demonstrated by the investigation into individuals who have made threats and comments against the representatives.
New Controversy
After President Trump announced on Twitter that both he and his wife, first lady Melania Trump, had tested positive for Coronavirus, the Twitterati immediately began rejoicing and hoping for his death. Bizarrely, many of these death wishes came in the form of satanic images and text, suggesting that some have finally found faith through the pursuit of their political goals. Jokes aside, it goes without saying that the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and President Trump’s hospitalization drew many different responses from their political counterparts. Overwhelmingly, influential Republicans on Twitter did not rejoice in Justice Ginsburg’s death. Most Republicans, including the president himself, noted her significant impact on the women’s movement in the United States. They stated that while they did not always agree with Justice Ginsburg’s judicial philosophy, she deserved respect for her lifetime achievements.
If Republicans were hoping for similar treatment of their influential figures, they were sorely disappointed. CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta implied that President Trump was in fatal condition on Saturday morning to the glee of his many far-left followers. Tweets hoping to hear that the president was on a ventilator showed up in the replies. It wasn’t until the president himself posted a video on Twitter showing his positive demeanor and apparent good health that the Twitter users admitted that their hopes had not yet come to fruition. Instead, they began nonsensically speculating that Trump never had the virus – as if such a ruse would benefit the commander in chief.
The Double Standard that Doesn’t Exist
Twitter leftists immediately began playing defense for the peers that could not contain their hatred and disdain for the President and Republicans for a few days. They argued that Twitter’s policy of removing negative tweets hoping for the president’s death was a form of censorship and that Republicans had not been subjected to the same treatment in the past – even though they have. In an even more bizarre tantrum, the same critics began to accuse Twitter of siding with the far-right, a favorite accusation of theirs that tends to come up whenever something doesn’t go their way.
The malicious keyboard warriors can continue to pretend that their side is made up of decent, open-minded patriots even when their actions show the complete opposite. The Twitter mob is willing to call for sickness, death, and misfortune on all their political enemies if it means an increased chance of victory for them, no matter how temporary. When journalists and pundits complain about the immense polarization in America today and feign ignorance over its causes, Americans only need to point to instances like these to show how radical and all-or-nothing the left has become in its quest for cultural dominance.
