Friday morning, February 20, the Supreme Court released a 170-page opinion ruling in Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump, that President Donald Trump does not have the legal power to impose across-the-board tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Analysis of the lengthy opinion will take some time, but the majority went against the administration 6-3. The die-hard conservative bloc is responsible for those 3 dissenting votes.
Writing for the Court, Chief Justice John Roberts argued that the broad wording of the IEEPA "cannot bear such weight" as President Trump's assertion that he can impose tariffs on imports from any country at any rate for any amount of time.
