Message from the Heartland: Give Credit Where It’s Due

by | Jun 15, 2018 | Politics

The historic and seemingly successful summit with the Rocket Man of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, has sparked two Norwegian politicians to nominate President Donald Trump for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize.  The nomination, not unexpected, arrived in time to celebrate the president’s 72nd birthday.

Christian Tybring-Gjedde, a member of Norway’s Progress Party, told members of the press that Trump’s ability to negotiate this meeting and the terms of ongoing relationships was “a huge and important step in the direction of the disarmament, peace and reconciliation between North and South Korea.”

British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson was also on board, saying if Trump could reign in Kim Jong Un, “I don’t see why he is any less of a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize than Barack Obama.”

As Trump declared immediately after the summit, there is “no longer” a nuclear threat from Kim Jong Un and North Korea.

Take That!

News of the Nobel nomination intermingled with questions of “just what does it mean?” as patrons of Danville, Illinois’ 5 Star Family Diner swilled coffee and iced tea while enjoying a hearty breakfast during the late morning hours.

Randall Moskovicz, a local plumber, was quick to talk back to the TV as his wife shook her head in amusement:

“Someone has got to give this guy some credit. He has a big pair to pull out of that stupid Iran deal and then get that crazy damn dictator to denuclearize and make nice with South Korea.  How is that not being a great president?”

His wife, Mary Elaine, replied, “Well who are you talking about? No one is picking on Trump here. Eat your eggs, we have to  be at the ball park in 20 minutes.”

Check Please!

At the Marathon gas station in Pine Village, Indiana, a student from Purdue University was at the cooler selecting a beverage for the road. Now an economics student in the heartland, he hailed originally from Selma, Alabama, and had a mouthful of a message, which has been edited for length only:

“You people around here in the boonies are all Trump nuts. I couldn’t figure out why he was so popular after he was elected but now with the tax reform and this whole North Korean denuclearization… I guess maybe he is doing right by the people.  But he needs to get rid of assault weapons. No one needs those, do they?”

He asked as if it were a rhetorical question, prompting one of the regular chatty, aimlessly retired guys to facepalm and mumble, “All us boonie badgers have guns, too.”

It seems the message from the Heartland is simple; give credit where credit is due.  Trump has brokered peace with a nation bent on war and world domination. It is a historic footnote to a presidential legacy that is still being written, and the majority of Americans eagerly await his next chapter. Trump deserves the Nobel Prize.

But don’t take my word for it. Daphne Jenkins of Philadelphia wrote this on her Facebook page: “I doubt seriously that they give it to him but he deserves it! #Winning
