In the early hours of Sunday morning, three gunmen opened fire at an event in the Miami Dade area. So far, two victims have been pronounced dead and it is estimated that up to 25 other people were injured, some seriously. The Miami police chief, Art Acevedo, has been quick to condemn the shooters as “cowardly misfits” and called for heavy jail time if and when the perpetrators are caught. He said:
“All of us in the greater Miami-Dade area must stand together against acts of violence, and our criminal justice system must throw the book at prohibited persons unlawfully caught with firearms. Most if these cowardly misfits don’t fear death, they do fear long prison sentences.”
Acevedo also lamented on how the justice system is leaving violent criminals on the streets because of a criminal court system at “a standstill,” leaving “thousands of felons running around and cases languishing three to five to six years before they even go to court.”
During a CBS’ “Face the Nation” appearance, the chief said, “My worry is as we continue to talk about defunding the police, instead of making the police better and investing in good policing, on the right, we’re talking about more guns for everybody.” He concluded, “And it is going to be a long summer.”
