Immigration Roundup: A Price Too High for Human Trafficking

Editor’s note: When it comes to immigration – illegal or otherwise – the American people have a right to be concerned. Each week, Liberty Nation author Kelli Ballard examines a contentious issue related to today’s hottest topic.

Coming to America – It’s Not Safe

Maurice 'Mo' Robinson

The Land of the Free and Home of the Brave is a highly sought after place to live, but coming into the United States illegally is a dangerous road to travel. Illegal immigrants come in droves, searching for ways to land on American soil by sea, land, climbing walls, digging tunnels, or paying to be smuggled. No matter which method is used, they are all dangerous – just as it is hazardous to commit any crime. Horror stories are broadcast about immigrants dying on their journeys, so why do they keep coming? And not just to America: This is happening all over the world.

Vietnamese Nationals Found Dead in England

On Oct. 23, authorities made a grisly discovery when 39 Vietnamese nationals were found dead inside a refrigerated trailer attached to a Scania cab. The discovery was made in  Waterglade Industrial Park in Grays, a town along the Thames River in Essex, England.

Chief Executive of the U.K.’s Road Haulage Association Richard Burnett said in a statement that the conditions inside the refrigerated unit would have been “absolutely horrendous,” with temperatures as low as -25°C (-13°F) and a lack of oxygen.

Later, during a court hearing in London, Maurice Robinson, a 25-year-old from Northern Ireland who goes by the nickname “Mo,” pleaded guilty to assisting unlawful immigration and acquiring criminal property likely cash for the “transportation.” He also faces one manslaughter charge for each of the 39 victims found in his trailer, with others for money laundering and conspiracy to commit human trafficking, for a total of 43 charges.

The victims in the trailer included 31 males and eight females. Their ages ranged from teens to mid-40s, the youngest being two 15-year-old boys.

The Human Market

Human trafficking is big business. Smugglers make thousands of dollars from the hopes and dreams of those seeking a better life. Sneaking illegal immigrants into the U.S., especially from Central America, has grown exponentially in the last decade. And the dynamics have changed, too. Males are not the primary demographic driving border crossings into the U.S.; now the promise of aid and asylum draws more women, children, and families.

What has caused this change? With President Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration-control policies, one would think people would become discouraged from making the dangerous trek. As Francisco Simon, a researcher on immigration at the University of San Carlos in the Philippines, said, “During the Trump administration, the price has increased incredibly for those who go alone or who try to cross the desert, and has gone down for unaccompanied children and parents with children.”

Trump’s determination to stem the flow of illegals seems to have created a new monster: a cadre of people determined to thwart the president and bring as many people from other countries here as possible. The left’s dangerous ambition for open borders, and liberals such as George Soros, who provide money for the trek, only boost the massive migration of today.

As the fight between immigration control and open borders rages on, we can expect more horror stories.
