Editor’s Note: While the media and other leftist elites ignore the millions of folks living in “flyover” states, they do so at their own peril; it was this silent majority that put President Trump in the White House. Each week, Liberty Nation gives voice to the hard-working heartlanders who are silent no more.
Let’s just say that if leftists are hoping for a Trumpocalypse with the advent and advance of the Coronavirus, once again, they will be sorely disappointed. After a presidential declaration of national emergency earlier this week, with states responding in enforcing social distancing to tamp down spreading a contagion with no cure, politicians are setting aside partisan sniping to calm an alarmed nation. Finally.
But a warning to those who may believe that all is well under the self-quarantining heartland: Flyover folks are not exceptionally keen on being visit-hobbled. No pop ins, no “yoo hoo, got any eggs” or front porch sitting close enough to converse. And the increase in lockdowns on coffee shops, beauty parlors, bars, and restaurants have hackles raised.
But I digress. Back to the bipartisan pandering.
Omar on the Run?
On Thursday, Hell was thought to have frozen over as Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) joined in on praising the Trump administration’s decisive response, tweeting, “Politics aside, this is incredible and the right response in this critical time.”
Huh? And she dragged her Squad pal Representative Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) into the story, “Ayanna Pressley always says, unprecedented times require unprecedented leadership and we are seeing that in our country right now. I have faith that we will survive this as a nation and build together.”
Those questionable praises of the orange man who they despised last week had George Powell in Newark, OH, arm-chair quarter-backing the situation: “The Democrats are pandering at the moment. Don’t you think they are worried?”
Worried because they need money. Worried because they need resources. Worried because an election year is underway. Another worried citizen is Sami White in Clovis, NM – for different reasons: “It makes me worry. Look at all the freedoms being taken away.”
No one between the Appalachians and Rockies applauded Omar – in fact most were simply suspicious – and thought she may be a bit desperate. But the backlash from her own side was simply scrumptious: One progressive Twitter follower, Tzippy Schmilovitz said, “My God, you’re ignorant and stupid.” That’s a stinger.
A New York State of Mind?
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo jumped on the Trump train as well this week after initially criticizing the federal government’s response as “absurd and nonsensical.” Oh, how his tune changed when faced with a problem in his own backyard. He went live, broadcast all over social media during a presser gushing, “His team is on it. They’ve been responsive. I want to say thank you.”
The heartlanders’ response was a bit more welcoming to Cuomo than Omar. Somewhat skeptical but nevertheless a friendlier tone: As Payette, ID weighed in with a measured post by Helen Lincoln, “This is what it takes to make America work in all things about being American – not political parties attacking like trained dogs.”
Ah, the unintended consequences of a crisis that has folks reeling, sharing opinions on social media, and foregoing the nachos that a favorite restaurant knows how to make just right – to stay safe. Pray this is over soon and flyover folks can get back to visiting.
