When it comes to using the Coronavirus outbreak to smear President Trump and his administration, the left is pulling out all the stops. Progressive politicians and their allies in the establishment media are working hard to turn the pandemic into a political weapon that will ensure a Democrat victory in November. The latest effort is a new super political action committee that accuses the president of allowing the virus to spread – but can this cause enough damage to unseat him?
Democratic PAC Against Trump
A well-known left-leaning newspaper recently reported that Pacronym, a political action committee aligned with the Democratic Party, intends to spend $5 million on digital ads using the outbreak to attack President Trump.
Pacronym, which is affiliated with a nonprofit named “Acronym,” is hoping that the coronavirus pandemic will be the central issue of the 2020 campaign. The illness has resulted in over 100 deaths in the United States so far and has had a debilitating impact on the economy.
Tara McGowan, the founder of Acronym, said: “This is a public health issue and a national security issue, but it’s also a public policy issue and thus a political one.” She also indicated that other left-leaning groups must pursue this line of attack while former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) refrain from becoming involved in the battle.
Of course, there is one problem with that theory: Neither candidate has stayed out of the smear campaign. Both of these men have slammed the president for his decision to cut off travel from China, Iran, and most of Europe, even though leading experts recommended the action.
Tim Murtaugh, a spokesman for the Trump campaign, responded to the ongoing attacks on the president by pointing out Biden’s response. “It is laughable that his allies would launch this attack when Americans can see for themselves through daily public briefings that President Trump and his team are on the case and have been so since before Joe Biden even woke up to the situation.”
Will This Harm the President?
Neither Sanders nor Biden have offered help to the Trump administration. The corporate press has not focused on informing the public about the outbreak, but instead, have chosen to turn the virus into a political cudgel to slam the president. Put simply, the left is in full campaigning mode, so any story or occurrence that they can use to increase their chances for winning in November will be used to that end.
However, many on the left are taking a more productive approach, doing what they can to ease the effects of the virus. Former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang offered his support to President Trump as his administration considers a temporary iteration of Yang’s primary platform: $1,000 per month to each adult.
Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg pledged $40 million to combat the spread of the coronavirus. The funds will go towards preventing the spread of the illness on the African continent and low/middle-income nations.
So, will this impact the president in November? According to a recent Gallup poll, his approval rating has slipped to 44%, but in previous weeks it had remained in the 47% range. There can be no doubt that the media’s efforts have had an impact. However, the coronavirus pandemic will pass. Then what will the Democrats have to show for their efforts?
