No Common Sense in Virginia’s Governance
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam signed five new gun control bills into law on Good Friday, and was proud of it. “I was proud to work with legislators and advocates on these measures,” the governor announced. “And I am proud to sign them into law.” He declared the acts “commonsense laws,” despite there being little sense involve.
As Liberty Nation’s Scott D. Cosenza reported the bad news:
“The gun control struggle started after Democrats gained control over the government in November and was settled Friday. In July, when the new laws take effect, Virginia will go from being a pro-gun jurisdiction to something far less than that.”
But, as Scott asks, will it prove a Pyrrhic victory for Northam and his gun grabbers? Firearm owners across the state are enraged, and some fear that these extreme new restrictions will result in more violence, not less.
What to Watch For
Don’t be surprised if the people of Virginia decide to fight back when the state comes after their guns. The spirit of the Founders runs deep in many a patriot, and they’ll only bend so far before they snap back.
Liberty on Lockdown
As COVID-19 sweeps across the nation, Americans huddle in their homes in fear. But is it justified? Coronavirus has killed about as many Americans as the flu does every year – considerably fewer than car accidents and not quite one-tenth as many as die in the average year from medical mistakes – yet we’ve yet to issue stay-at-home orders over the seasonal flu, ban cars, or prohibit people from visiting doctors. But the medical professionals across the nation declare this one of the greatest threats the United States has ever faced. As folks respond to any question of the veracity of those claims by saying “leave it to the experts,” are we abandoning common sense in favor of a new form of tyranny?
Liberty Nation’s Onar Åm wrote:
“Leave it to the experts: That’s what folks are telling President Trump about Coronavirus guidelines. Should he? Even if the medical experts really do know how best to survive the pandemic, should we give them the reins of power? Each expert also represents an interest group. That’s fine, but the job of the president and Congress is to take the interests of all people into account and balance them against each other. Giving all the authority to a single group results in a form of tyranny, even if done expertly.”
What to Watch For
On the one hand, President Trump and many state governors are getting tired of the lockdown. With the death toll continuing to rise, quarantine or no, we may never know if stay-at-home orders actually made much difference. There is some hope we’ll be “reopening the nation” at the beginning of May. On the other hand, many experts say the worst is yet to come – so don’t hold your breath!
Washington Whispers & Other Juicy Tidbits
Be on the lookout for:
- President Trump on Friday issued a memo threatening to withhold visas for people from countries that do not quickly repatriate their citizens from the U.S. due to concerns over the coronavirus. Expect the usual drivel from the left about racism and xenophobia – with no mention of the other nations that won’t take back their own, of course.
