From the Back Forty: A Problematic Week for Progressives

It was an awkward week for the left – but an amusing one for heartlanders. From the Save Act to the Epstein Files and the European main stage, plenty of progressives found themselves in a real political pickle. And it’s hard to say who had it worse.

Another Embarrassing Moment for Progressives

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – the anointed one who has been touted by some as the one to watch for president in 2028 – has stepped in it again. Perhaps believing that no one in Munich spoke English, Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) went abroad. Instead of just gripping and grinning with that toothy smile, she nearly did herself in for good by talking.

No one had to consult the globe in grandpa’s office to see the problem when she claimed the US cannot go around grabbing Venezuelan dictators like Nicolás Maduro “just because the nation is south of the equator.”

Knowledge of geography seems important to the job of president – but so do foreign relations. She did not shine here, either. Presented with a question on Taiwan, AOC put forth a 20-second word salad that ended with: “Um, you know, I think that this is such a, you know, I think that this is, this is of course a very longstanding policy of the United States,” she mumbled as she struggled to answer.

“One could dissect her words for the next ten years straight, with the best of intentions, and still one would not glean anything coherent or useful from them,” wrote National Review’s Charles C. W. Cooke.

And like RonCo before her, there was more. AOC attempted to make a mockery of Secretary of State Marco Rubio over the Spanish origin of the American cowboy. Enslaved blacks and Mexicans were the original cowboys, according to her. The Vaqueros of Spain brought much of what we consider cowboy culture – including horses – to the New World back when it was still considered new. This marked the reintroduction of the horse to North America after a 9,000-year absence. Here's a classic statement from David Harris, an author on antisemitism: "Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) isn't just an ignoramus. She's dangerous because she has the support of a larger group of ignoramuses."

“If I were running — if I had made a decision or anything about being president, or Senate, or anything like that — frankly, I say this all the time: Am I acting like someone who is trying to run? No! Because I’m there for a very different, specific purpose,” she said.

Well, like what? SNL skit template?

And You Thought It Couldn’t Get Worse

Hillary Clinton and a bevy of democratic politicians have been trying to get a catchphrase going, but it’s irritable at best: Polling Place Tax. Ladies, there will be a fee levied if you vote, they’d have you believe. That is a big fat lie.

This all stems from earlier attempts to scare women into voting Blue. They started with the old “if you have been married, your name will disqualify you.” Well, that was quickly debunked.

And all this comes from the party that can’t even define what a woman is. Not to be left out, Gavin Newsom put out a message of his own. After all, who knows how long this scare tactic will last? The Golden State governor said that he and millions of Americans would have trouble complying with the SAVE Act because it would require having a birth certificate. He said, “You've got to find your birth certificate… I have no clue where mine is."

Jim Hammer in Bascom, OH, was near bowled over: “If only a person could obtain a certified copy of their birth certificate.” Lucien Chandler went further: “If there was only a place that kept records of things like that.”

In Sturgis, MI, Jeremy Bailey deemed it unnecessary to list such a place as Vital Records. He went for something entirely different for women of a certain age: “Why does this guy look like most 1980s movie villains?”

The Guy Won’t Stay Dead

The Epstein Files ground zero is expanding – now co-hosts of The View Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar are up in arms defending themselves. “We did nothing wrong. We only went to a few parties.” It was okay to assume Trump’s guilt, but as soon as their own names came up, it was just a party or plane ride, right?

Neil Smith in Troy, AL, thoughtfully pointed out the hypocrisy: “Didn't she say if you were in the files, you were guilty? I don't make the rules, she did...”

Well, yeah, that's the problem – the "parties."
