After 16 years as prime minister in Hungary, Viktor Orbán conceded defeat in Sunday’s parliamentary election. He congratulated his opponent, Péter Magyar, leader of the opposition party Tisza, after projections showed him winning about a two-thirds majority. Magyar’s victory seems likely to bring a change in the way the nation deals with the rest of the world, especially regarding how the European Union deals with Ukraine. Orbán, for example, has generally opposed the EU’s involvement in the war between Russia and Ukraine, even going so far as to block a loan package to the beleaguered nation. “Hungary has chosen Europe,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen posted to X. “Europe has always chosen Hungary. Together, we are stronger. A country reclaims its European path. The Union grows stronger.” Both US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin had supported Orbán's bid to remain in power. However, it was not meant to be. The estimated 135 to 137 seats in the parliament Tisza now seems set to pick up represents more than a two-thirds majority, allowing them to rewrite the nation’s Constitution and pass essentially any laws they desire.
