Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, which has metastasized to his bones, his personal office announced on Sunday, May 18. Mr. Biden was reportedly seen last week for a new finding of a prostate nodule after experiencing urinary symptoms, the statement said.
“On Friday he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,” the statement continued. “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management. The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”
Prostate cancer is a common one for men and is the second-leading cause of cancer death in American men, right behind lung cancer. Approximately one-in-eight men are diagnosed during their lives, according to the American Cancer Society.
The former president’s spokesperson announced last Tuesday that the “small nodule” had been found during a routine physical exam. As of now, the spokesperson says the Biden family doesn’t have any additional comment beyond the official statement.
