Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted today, Thursday, September 25, for making false statements and obstruction.
During his September 2020 testimony before Congress, Comey stood by his prior testimony that he had not, as FBI director, authorized a leak of information to The Wall Street Journal for an article that ran in October of 2016. That testimony, however, didn’t match up with former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe’s claim that he reported the leak to Comey, who then authorized it.
“Mr. Comey and Mr. McCabe’s statements are irreconcilably contradictory,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) later explained. “One of them is lying under oath – a federal crime,” the lawmaker added.
US Attorney Lindsey Halligan, a White House aide recently appointed to the office, sought three charges from a grand jury in Virginia. They granted two of the three: one count of making false statements and one count of obstruction of justice.
