If you want to see what the future of law enforcement in a progressive United States looks like, have a gander at new Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden cutting the cake during a celebration to mark his first official act in office: ceasing cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The full-fledged leftist organization, which once pretended to be a civil liberties group, has now shifted to outright political activism. Awash in donations following the election of President Trump in 2016, the ACLU is taking its newfound cash clout local, right down to the county sheriff level.
Their Man With a Star
“Now we have to show Charlotte that this is a step in the right direction,” Sheriff McFadden says in the video of his tacky celebration, provided by local television outlet WBTV. “And I need everybody’s help to show Charlotte, and the nation, that we are doing the right thing.”
The 287g program is a way for local law enforcement officials to work with ICE to get illegal aliens removed from our country, and that is exactly the program McFadden has discarded in his first act as sheriff. The Charlotte Observer reports more than 15,000 people in Mecklenburg County have entered the deportation process under the program since 2006, showing the sheer magnitude of the illegal alien problem in North Carolina and the nation at large.
ICE Atlanta Field Office Director Sean Gallagher told the Observer that McFadden’s grandstanding act would have negative consequences for the community he is pledged to serve. “In Fiscal Year 2018 the Mecklenburg County 287g program encountered 1,185 criminal aliens; yesterday’s decision to end this law enforcement agreement leaves them to reoffend against the people of Mecklenburg County,” Gallagher said.
McFadden hasn’t been the only North Carolina sheriff apparently taking ACLU money in return for endangering the citizens of his county. New Wake County Sheriff Gerald Baker has also announced that he is ending his county’s partnership with ICE. Like McFadden, Baker was elected to his post with the help of expensive local ad buys by the ACLU. The group spent $100,000 for a radio ad targeting Baker’s rival, Republican incumbent Donnie Harrison, the Raleigh News & Observer reports. The ad stated that Harrison was “tearing families apart and stoking racial tensions” through his willingness to work with federal officials to help enforce the immigration laws of this land.
Shopping For Sheriffs
A June article in The New Yorker detailed how a suddenly cash-soaked ACLU was diving into local sheriff’s races as a way to thwart immigration enforcement. Fueled by donations from moneyed progressives, the organization targeted the sheriff’s races in North Carolina as part of an experiment in local-level elections with law enforcement ramifications. It started with a district attorney race in Philadelphia before moving on to North Carolina. The New Yorker’s Benjamin Wallace-Wells reports McFadden was so grateful for the ACLU’s financial efforts on his behalf that:
“The day after the vote in Mecklenburg County, McFadden, who had just won the Democratic nomination, called the A.C.L.U.’s national political director, Faiz Shakir, to thank him. Shakir told me that he encouraged McFadden to make Mecklenburg into a national model for how a progressive sheriff might run his department.”
And so, on Day One of his term as sheriff, McFadden dutifully terminated the working agreement with ICE, vowing that he “declined to do ICE’s bidding.” Of course, by this very action, he appeared to be doing the ACLU’s bidding to the letter. Is he the ACLU’s man in the Mecklenburg County sheriff’s department?
The blueprint from here on out is fairly obvious. A money-laden ACLU will aim to repeat this successful “experiment” in counties throughout America in an attempt to purchase the local law enforcement departments of this nation and get them to refrain from enforcing immigration law. The process of electing local sheriffs is being poisoned by a financially powerful outsider group eager to see that laws it does not like are not enforced. Is this really that different from Al Capone owning police captains back in the day?
