President Donald Trump addressed the General Assembly this week, and he once again reiterated his “America First” vision. But he did much more than that — he also sent a strong message to the enemies of the United States.
As foreign leaders are still trying to get used to an American president who isn’t afraid to tell it like it is, Trump gave an impressive representation of the new direction the U.S. is taking.
Trump’s U.N. Speech
President Trump started off the assembly with a rousing speech, in which he blasted globalism and affirmed his commitment to putting America first. He defended his decision to remove the United States from the U.N. Human Rights Council, an organization that has repeatedly worked against the interests of the United States while propping up oppressive regimes.
Trump then went on to criticize the international criminal court. He claimed the court “violates all principles of justice.”
The president also said that the United States would not participate in the global compact for migration. He argued that issues like migration should not be regulated by an unelected international body.
Of course, the establishment media couldn’t resist the temptation to use the speech to attack Trump. At the beginning of his speech, many in the crowd laughed when he claimed that he had accomplished more in two years than any other president. They made it appear as if they were laughing at him. As usual, there was more to the story than the media reported.
It is clear that the audience was laughing with Trump, not at him. Jacinda Ardern, the prime minister of New Zealand, affirmed this in an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “There was a little laughter, and then he said, ‘I didn’t expect that response,’ and then there was a bigger laugh,” she said. “Then people laughed with him.”
Trump Slams Justin Trudeau
It is no secret that there is no love lost between President Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The two leaders have clashed repeatedly over trade and tariffs, and it appears their little feud is not going to end anytime soon.
At the summit, the president ripped Trudeau, claiming that the Canadian leader is not working with him on trade. Earlier in the week, Trump turned down a one-on-one meeting with Trudeau because of the stalemate between the two.
“His tariffs are too high, he doesn’t seem to want to move, and I’ve told him, ‘forget about it,’” Trump said. “We’re very unhappy with the negotiations and the negotiating style of Canada.” The president also indicated that he was considering applying a tax on automobiles imported from Canada. His administration is expected to send a proposal to Congress for a new trade agreement that does not include our neighbors to the north.
Justin Trudeau and Donald TrumpTrump Announces New Sanctions
When giving his speech to the U.N. General Assembly, President Trump hammered on the Iranian government, announcing that his administration would impose new sanctions on Tehran in November. He indicated that there would be “more to follow.”
After the president pulled the U.S. out of the Iran nuclear deal, there was tremendous blowback from the international community. But it appears that Trump is not giving in to the pressure to go back on his decision. “The United States has launched a campaign of economic pressure to deny the regime the funds it needs to advance its bloody agenda,” he said. “Last month, we began re-imposing hard-hitting nuclear sanctions that had been lifted under the Iran Deal.
The president also announced that the administration is “working with countries that import Iranian crude oil to cut their purchases substantially.” He excoriated Iran’s leaders for sowing “chaos, death, and destruction.” He pointed out that they do not respect bordering countries, but they “plunder the nation’s resources to enrich themselves and to spread mayhem across the Middle East and far beyond.”
Since taking office, Trump has taken a harsher stance toward the Iranian regime than his predecessor. His rhetoric toward their president Hassan Rouhani has been forceful; earlier this year, he tweeted a serious threat:
“To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!”
If the president’s words are any indication, it is clear that the United States is no longer willing to appease Tehran — especially when it comes to their nuclear program. His final sentence on Iran says it all: “We cannot allow a regime that chants ‘Death to America,’ and that threatens Israel with annihilation, to possess the means to deliver a nuclear warhead to any city on Earth.”
Trump Makes Another Strong Showing
As he always does when he goes overseas, President Trump made his message clear to the international community. He delivered a powerful message about the importance of each nation’s right to self-determination. More than that, he also showed America’s enemies that they would not succeed.
The president’s approach is a refreshing contrast from his predecessor, Barack Obama, who spent more time apologizing for America than asserting the nation’s exceptionalism. It is abundantly clear that President Donald Trump is fulfilling his promise to put America first.
