This Week in Open Borders America: Migrants Becoming Homeowners

Georgia cracks down on sanctuary supporters and lawmakers consider the Laken Riley Act.

Allowing Illegal Migrants to Purchase Homes

While Americans struggle to buy their first homes, California has introduced a bill that will make it easier for migrants to become homeowners. Assembly Bill 1840, introduced in January by Democrat Assemblymember Joaquin Arambula, expands on the original California Dream for All Shared Appreciation Loan Program bill to make it clear those in the state illegally “shall not be disqualified solely based on the applicant’s immigration status.”

The original bill was established in 2023 to help low-and-middle class residents buy their first homes. It offered a down-payment of up to 20% of the purchase price. The loan doesn’t accrue interest and there are no monthly payments. Instead, borrowers repay it, and another 20%, when it’s sold or refinanced. This $300 million program, as the Los Angeles Times reported, was so popular it ran out of funding just 11 days after it began.

Arambula said, “What we are simply saying is those that have been in our state for years, if not decades, who are otherwise able to qualify for a loan should also be able to apply through the California Dream for All, and we are providing that clarity with our bill.”

Opponents of the bill claim this is another example of putting migrants over citizens and veterans. “They should be first in line to buy homes and to get assistance, not people who aren’t from this country,” Mayor Bill Wells (R) of El Cajon told CBS News. “And you know,” he continued, “in fact, some come from countries that our young men and women were actually fighting against. We shouldn’t move people to the front of the line who haven’t paid their dues.”

Supervisor Jim Desmond (R) of San Diego County’s Fifth District told NBC San Diego, “We have a huge housing crisis in California, and anything we can do to get people into housing, we should do. However, we should help our own first. This next generation of people growing up can’t afford a house. I’ve got kids in their early 30s and most of their friends do not own houses.”

Georgia Cracking Down on Sanctuary Cities and Counties

On March 6, the Senate Public Safety Committee voted 4-1 to rewrite House Bill 301 to enforce the 2009 state law that outlaws sanctuary cities and counties. The proposed bill would let Georgia residents sue, “asking a judge to declare a city or county was violating the 2009 law,” according to an Associated Press report. If a judge agrees, then the state would stop aid, including federal resources, except for emergency and health services. Under this proposal, if a city or county were found “guilty,” they would not get financial help for building or maintaining roads.

State Senator Randy Robertson, a Republican, told the committee that this would also ensure sheriff’s offices comply with ICE as well. “What we’ve done in this legislation is we’ve added some teeth, because there were none in the past.”

Last Week, Georgia lawmakers approved House Bill 1105, which requires law enforcement to help identify and detain illegal migrants in the state. “As part of our ongoing commitment to protect Georgians, we are taking a stand against those who attempt to implement sanctuary policies that violate the law and harbor criminals,” said Lt. Gov. Burt Jones.

The Laken Riley Act

The US House passed legislation Thursday, March 7, that would require detaining illegal immigrants charged or convicted of theft, “the essential elements of any burglary, theft, larceny, or shoplifting offense,” according to the text.

The Laken Riley Act comes after the murder of its namesake. Georgia student Laken Riley was allegedly killed by Jose Antonio Ibarra, an illegal immigrant from Venezuela who had already been arrested in the US before on other charges. Rep. Dan Meuser (R-PA) commented, “Is there anything more horrific than we have seen from the Laken Riley situation – how an illegal from Venezuela made it across the border illegally, went to New York, committed all kinds of crimes, was let out by the weak, foolish, ideological prosecutors in New York, and then went on to Georgia and murdered a beautiful young girl?”
