The 2024 Stage Might Get a Lot More Crowded

Heartlanders watch for new political threats across the board.

Editor’s Note: From the Back Forty is Liberty Nation’s longest running and most popular weekly column. Capturing the truth each week from heartlanders in flyover states, LN gives voice to the hard-working Americans otherwise ignored by the coastal elites.

Heartlanders across the political spectrum are reconsidering their 2024 election options. Faced with more indictments against number 45, the stumbling and mumbling 46, and a citizenry on edge about foreign wars, economic woes, and the lies they’ve been told, flyover folk speak out this week and sand against the grain.

The Well-timed DOJ

Middle America likes a fair fight, liberty, and justice for all. This past week, Hunter Biden’s sweetheart deal began to unravel and one member of his legal team allegedly pretended to be a Republican lawyer on a call asking that IRS whistleblower testimony be stricken from the docket. Attorneys for Hunter claimed the incident was “an unfortunate and unintentional miscommunication.” Yeah, no one bought that denial, including the presiding judge.

But then, wouldn’t you know it, another indictment dropped against former President Donald Trump and took the Biden news off the front page. Unfortunately for Democrats, however, it seems this latest attack on the former president caused support for him to grow overnight yet again. Polls show Trump leagues ahead of his trailing GOP presidential competitors and too close to call in a hypothetical match-up with President Biden.

Not Everyone Appreciates Biden or Trump in 2024

Just this weekend, at the Iowa Lincoln Day Dinner, former Texas Rep. Will Hurd let his worries out about former President Trump: “Donald Trump is not running for president to make America great again. Donald Trump is not running for president to represent the people who voted for him in 2016 and 2020,” Hurd told the stunned crowd.

And he didn’t put the shovel down, either. He just kept digging his hole:

“Donald Trump is running to stay out of prison. I know. I know, I know, I know, I know. Listen, I know the truth. The truth is hard. But if we elect Donald Trump, we are willingly giving Joe Biden four more years in the White House, and America can’t handle that. God bless you, and God bless America.”

Some MAGA folks bristled, like Jill Beckley in Wallis, TX. “No one’s Hurd of him,” she quipped. But support does not change the fact that this latest indictment brings the total to 40, and the math is ridiculous: If convicted of all charges and given the maximum for each to be served back-to-back, Trump could find himself sentenced to hundreds of years in prison. In Lupton, MI, Matt Jaissle spoke up: “Hey, arresting your opponent always worked for 3rd world dictators before! Enjoy the new Amerika and our continuing foreign wars.”

Former President Trump has his detractors, but, believe it or not, Joe Biden isn’t all that popular, either. A hypothetical match-up between 82-year-old Biden and 78-year-old Trump is chaffing the skin of those who watch the craziness unfold. Daily Indictments, cocaine in the people’s house, tax evasion accusations against nearly everyone, Document-gate, and a country flailing in a recession are all hallmarks of something that needs changing.

This scenario has prompted the people in between the elite coastal environs to check into third-party and alternative candidates. Some centrist conservatives, Democrats, and independents are rallying to nominate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to run as an independent or “Unity” ticket, and the No Labels group is cuddling up to Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV).

But the Democrats aren’t giving up quite yet: Peeking around the political corner is Rep. Dean Phillips, a so-called Minnesota moderate, who has been in not-so-secret meetings with big-money Democrats. Phillips let slip to Politico: “Nobody wants to be the one to do something that would undermine the chances of a Democratic victory in 2024. Yet in quiet rooms, the conversation is just the opposite — we could be at a higher risk if this path is cleared.” No one has sent that memo to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is slowly gaining momentum.

And here we thought Gov. Gavin Newsom was the next in line — the golden boy of the Democratic Party. But what about Vice President Harris? Even Emily’s List knows Kamala is a no-go after her disastrous stint as the Biden border czar. She will surely be farmed out to a K-Street lobbyist firm without ever sitting behind the Resolute Desk. Old “Red” MacIntosh, a whiskey-drinking gentleman farmer from Indiana, would refer to those liar-types as “Folks who would tell a lie even when the truth is a better story.”
