Prominent New York Democrats Cozied Up to Chinese Police Station

Mayor Eric Adams received campaign contributions, praised group at splashy dinner.

One of the two men charged with running an illegal overseas Chinese police station in New York City that helped the communist superpower repress anti-regime activists abroad has extensive ties to Democrats in the Empire State.

“Lu Jianwang, whom the FBI arrested [on April 17] for conspiring to act as an agent of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), is pictured with New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer [D-NY],” The Daily Caller reports,” and even attended an apparent fundraiser for New York Democratic Rep. Grace Meng [D-NY], according to multiple Chinese-language news reports and photographic evidence.”

“Multiple photos taken at events in New York City reveal that Lu Jianwang met with Meng, Adams, and Schumer during events in 2022 and 2023,” the news site states.

Gotham Democrats in Compromising Positions

Adams appears to be the most entangled prominent Democrat. On Sept. 26, 2022, he served as an “honored guest” at a “glitzy dinner” sponsored by the America ChangLe Association NY Inc., the organization pinpointed by the FBI as running the police station. The ChangLe office was closed following an FBI raid last fall.

The New York Post noted that Adams did not list his attendance at the dinner on his official schedule. Adams hailed the communist foreign policing force, the paper relates:

“[A]ccording to photos posted of the event by businessman George Xu on his LinkedIn page, Adams was onstage at the event. Other Democrats in attendance included State Senator John Liu and City Council Member Sandra Ung, and representatives from the offices of Congresswoman Grace Meng and City Council member Christopher Marte. At least two members of the NYPD were also seen in the photos….

“At the dinner, Adams made a speech honoring the America ChangLe Association, according to a Queens-based Chinese language news service post.”

Adams was quoted as saying the ChangLe Association “makes great contributions to New York where they live and plays an important role in promoting new immigrants to improve their quality of life in New York.” According to public records, James Lu, the president of ChangLe, contributed $4,000 to Adams’ mayoral campaign in 2019 and 2021.

Human rights group Safeguard Defenders has exhaustively reported on China’s foreign police stations. “Strikes against Chinese overseas suspects” are conducted via a “110 Overseas” campaign. The number 110 is the Chinese equivalent of the 911 emergency line in the US. Safeguard Defenders explained how the stations operate:

“Overseas hometown associations, while often providing genuine services to the community, have by now become overwhelmingly co-opted by the CCP’s United Front organizations, which seek to increasingly control the Chinese diaspora. Leaders of hometown associations are frequently rewarded with meetings with CCP officials, participation in party-organised events and symbolic appointments to party-controlled bodies in China. In return, they are expected to assist the party in its propaganda and political influence activities, such as promoting China’s invasion (under the propaganda guise of ‘peaceful reunification’) of Taiwan.”

Schumer and Hochul Join In

Lu Jianwang participated in protests against the visit to the US of Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen in March. “In one photo, Lu can be seen among a huddle of protesters. One holds a placard reading: ‘Tsai Ing-wen is a Big Traitor of China,’” Radio Free Asia reports. Yet none of this appears to have bothered top New York Democrats, including the majority leader of the US Senate, from associating with him.

“In fact, Lu Jianwang and Adams met as recently as March 18, 2023, at an event celebrating the 81st anniversary of the Fujian Hometown Association, according to US China Press,” The Daily Caller observes. “This meeting occurred several months after it was widely reported that the FBI had raided the American Changle Association, and the overseas police station closed down. A group photo from the event reveals that Lu Jianshun also attended…. Schumer also attended the March 2023 event, according to a report from Sina.com.”

Though not directly tied to ChangLe, Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul has also raised eyebrows with her cozy ties to communist Chinese officials. Huang Ping, consul general of China’s New York Consulate, prominently stood beside Hochul in February as the chief executive of the fourth-largest state in the US waved a communist Chinese flag at a Lunar New Year Parade in Lower Manhattan.

“Hochul met with Huang before then on several occasions,” Fox News reports. “According to a post on the website of the Chinese consulate, Hochul and Huang met in April 2019 when she was the lieutenant governor to discuss cooperation between New York and China. The post includes a picture of them standing beside each other and smiling while holding a certificate that she presented to him for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.”

“In February 2021, Huang called the now-governor an ‘old friend’ in a Facebook post, featuring a video of her,” the network added.

Huang has been a vocal defender of the Asian superpower’s brutal repression of its Muslim Uyghur minority. “I see these centers as a campus, rather than camps,” he has said of the internment camps that house the persecuted ethnic group. “We get these people there to be educated. And this has been quite effective in terms of countering terrorism and in de-radicalization. Up to now, there has not been a single terrorist attack in exactly four years.”

If only they would stop carping about Russia for a second, perhaps Democrats could turn an eye towards the alarmingly chummy relationship their party colleagues in New York have with the number one geopolitical enemy of the United States today as it operates on American soil.
