During the Civil Rights movement, millions of Americans, both black and white, marched to promote equal rights among people of all races. These individuals worked tirelessly to destroy the evils of segregation and Jim Crow. The hard left has decided to honor this period in American history not by embracing the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but by rolling it back.
Is Segregation Empowering?
Virginia Tech University recently started offering ten segregated graduation ceremonies that are separated by race, sexuality, and other identity groups. Students are allowed to participate in the graduation of their choosing. The ceremonies are open to anyone who wishes to attend, but the participants must fall into the right category. If you happen to be white and you want to visit your black friend’s graduation, that’s fine. But if you’re a white student, you can’t participate in the Latino ceremony, you racist.
You might be tempted to think that segregation of this type reeks of bigotry. But the proponents of this policy argue that it is actually empowering. Virginia Tech is not the first university to offer separate graduations, but it is the first to provide a graduation ceremony for veterans and those in recovery from addictions, so there’s that.
Why Segregate Graduations?
It is representative of the same type of thinking that created safe spaces for minorities and members of the LGBTQ community to retreat to areas where they can be perpetually affirmed. Unfortunately, nothing is empowering about these policies that reward mental weakness and hypersensitivity. Professors and other faculty members at various colleges are doing their students a grave disservice under the guise of inclusion and diversity.
The reality is that Americans are all individuals with unique experiences. Podcaster and author Wayne Dupree summed it up nicely:
“If I was a Tech student, I would demand a full graduation ceremony, just for me. After all, nobody understands my struggles and I don’t have a voice. Nobody else has gone through what I have gone through, so how is having others at my graduation ceremony going to allow me to express what I have gone through?”
Policies such as these only serve to divide Americans further and it is part and parcel of the hard left’s approach to influence. Instead of emphasizing unity, they push division at every opportunity because it makes it easier to manipulate their targets.
But the reality is that it is not necessary that Americans have a deep understanding of one another on all issues. Even someone of the same race, religion, or sexual orientation cannot fully understand your life experiences on the same level as yourself. It is not the ability to have a deeper knowledge that is important; it is the willingness to treat each other as individual human beings that matters.
