Shoppers limited their spending during the holidays.
US retailers did not have themselves a merry little Christmas. In fact, all they wanted for Christmas was for consumers to max out their credit cards, take out buy now pay later loans, and exhaust their savings to buy stuff for people they do not like with money they do not have. While retail sales were up, they fell short of expectations and were half of what they were a year ago.
