A new poll conducted by ABC/Ipsos is causing Democrats and their friends in the media to grab a life raft and abandon Joe Biden’s sinking ship. Just how underwater is the USS 46 with the American people? In a word: very.
To the less nautical, the phrase “Abandon ship!” is a command to leave the vessel immediately, a signal to those aboard that they face imminent destruction. In other words: separate yourself from the watercraft or you, too, will drown.
No matter the topic, Biden is losing ground with those who previously supported him. Here are a few pearls from the newly minted poll:
COVID-19
One year after entering office, Biden has lost the approval of almost one in five Americans (19%) on his response to the coronavirus, dropping from 69% approval in January 2021 to 50% in January 2022. (This was a high point of the poll for Biden.)
The Economy
The great majority of Americans (75%) describe the economy as not so good (47%) or poor (28%).
Immigration
Only 34% of those polled approve of the administration’s handling of immigration and the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Crime
Sixty-four percent of those surveyed disapprove of how crime in the United States is being handled.
Only 47% support the president’s management of the developing situation regarding Russia and Ukraine. Just 29% approve of his handling of inflation, and a whopping 76% think it’s not a good idea to choose a U.S. Supreme Court justice based on gender or race.
In short, this is a disastrous poll. That it was conducted by an outlet that leans left makes matters even worse. The Independent Journal Review characterized the results as “brutal.” And it has a point.
The Over-Performer
Characterizing himself as an over-performer has not helped Mr. Biden and may confirm that he is out of touch with his administration and certainly out of step with the people he has been elected to lead. An ABC News headline screamed out, “President Biden’s job approval sinking … ” as if this was somehow new information. Instead, what appears to be unique is that the leftist media recognize the American people’s palpable discontent with Mr. Biden and his policies.
Traditionally, polls that lean left tend to oversample Democrats, which is likely to be the case this time. Unfortunately, the ABC/Ipsos survey did not make public the raw numbers of party affiliation, which may lead one to conclude that an oversampling of Democrats would make these results even more damning.
Such numbers will have Democrats scattering like rats in the hold below deck as we approach the 2022 midterm elections. Perhaps this is what lies behind the plethora of Democratic representatives suddenly ready to retire. The question on the lips of so many political pundits is whether the upcoming election will be a bloodbath for the blue. If these polls are any indication, that may be the case. This could also be the reason why so many in the legacy media are beginning to take Biden & Company to task because, as everyone knows, “Abandon ship!” is just another way of saying “Every man for himself.”
