Ivanka Rises

Yes, we do realize that there are more pressing issues in the world, but now and then Liberty Nation likes to stop and reflect on the lighter side – especially when those persecuted by the left seem to rise again.

Such is the case with Ivanka Trump and her oppressed clothing line. As reported here on Liberty Nation last month, leftist organizations pressured department stores across the nation to drop Ms. Trump’s clothing line. For a while, it seemed they were winning that war with the threat of boycotts and the bullying of retail chains to forego the sale of all things Ivanka.

Well, well, well – wouldn’t you know that things seem to be backfiring on those efforts. It seems Neiman Marcus has added a few Ivanka items and is now back on the left’s hit list. And reports of the first daughter’s clothing line showing record sales are oozing out of the toothpaste tube here, here and here.

According to an op-ed in The Washington Times, “The tracking agency, Lyst, says the [Ivanka] brand jumped 346 percent in just the past month.”  Folks, that’s a lot of skirts and blouses and dresses and shoes.

Of course, department stores aren’t the only places American women purchase clothes these days. Enter the online market, and there you have even more sunny news for the Ivanka brand.  “Ivanka’s perfumes have become top sellers on Amazon.com. One of them sold all of its stock. Customer reviews online show that many of the buyers were persuaded to buy [because of] the controversy, and many of them wanted to show support for Ivanka,” according to the Times.

One five-star reviewer of Ivanka perfume on Amazon wrote:

Out of pure cussedness, I purchased Ivanka Trump’s perfume. I was sick and tired of the “Insufferables” bashing her and her fashion line because they couldn’t find a more mature way of expressing their intense hatred of her father. For all I knew, it could have been a dupe for Lysol toilet bowl cleaner, I didn’t care, I wanted to show that I support her and her endeavors.

Fortune Magazine reports that Abigail Klem, President of the Ivanka clothing line, responded to questions regarding brand sales by saying, “Since the beginning of February, they were some of the best performing weeks in the history of the brand,” Klem said. “For several different retailers Ivanka Trump was a top performer online, and in some of the categories it was the [brand’s] best performance ever.”

Boycotts can be a double-edged sword. Sometimes they only serve to heighten awareness of the things that are supposed to be avoided. Americans by their very nature are a rebellious bunch. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “Rebellion against tyrants is obedience to God.” Or in the words of Henry David Thoreau, “Disobedience is the true foundation of liberty.”

Thus, it does seem that American women are a rebellious group and don’t like to be told what they can and can’t wear or purchase by political hacks. Women in this country simply don’t want limited choices regarding dresses and shoes just because of someone else’s political views. Ultimately it means the left’s effort to establish a political retail ghetto isn’t working. At all.

Shame about that.
