Is a Silver Wave Primed to Shock the Pollsters?

The young may know nothing of the horrors of socialism, but the older folks do.

It has become in most circles almost a foregone conclusion that the Democrats are primed to seize control of the House of Representatives and perhaps the Senate come November 3. Considering longstanding historical trends favoring the out party in midterm elections, President Trump’s sub-40% approval rating, and the stubbornly high cost of living, it is entirely unsurprising to see widespread predictions of a blue wave. The question now is whether the outcome is already baked in, or if the pollsters are in for a surprise. Is there something that might plausibly arise in the less than two weeks remaining before Election Day, any element about the electorate that might not have been properly incorporated into the widespread analysis of voter preferences?

And what makes this midterm election any different from all the others when the party in power suffers substantial losses? Socialism, that’s what’s different. The one reason GOP operatives have to be optimistic that they may at least cut their expected losses is the corollary to why socialism has gained growing popularity.

As we have often discussed in this space, a figure such as Zohran Mamdani could only succeed with his radical socialist message by targeting voters young enough to have never lived the horrifying realities of socialism and communism. The Soviet Union dissolved in 1991, so nobody under the age of 40 in this country has any real memory of Soviet tyranny, the millions of deaths, starvation, economic ruin, and chronic despair. They have at best scant knowledge of the butchery of Josef Stalin, Mao Tse-tung, Pol Pot, and Fidel Castro, all in the name of socialism. But at least they do now know the consequences of socialist policies and Islamist infiltration in France, where Paris is burning.

The Republicans’ Silver Corollary

Here is where we come to the corollary and the reason there is growing discussion about not a blue or red but silver wave driven by older Americans who did live through the days of communism and who do remember the nightmare that brought half the world to its knees. Voter enthusiasm surveys are showing signs of older voters surging to the polls, according to The Washington Stand, and voting in greater numbers for Republican candidates than they have in recent years, according to GOP pollster and campaign strategist Matt Towery.

“The Silver Wave, right now, I am seeing in poll after poll after poll. The 18-39 years old crowd, who are supposed to be dying to turn out to vote to turn everything upside down, they are about 30 points less enthusiastic about voting than the 65 years old and over, who are the most enthusiastic and for the first time in three election cycles are going for Republicans in droves,” Towery explained in an October 12 video post on X after making similar comments on Sean Hannity’s radio show. Towery credits former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich for advising Republicans to focus on the “socialism issue” because older voters “understand the oppressiveness.”

If the rising threat of socialism is not real enough to those who remember the horrors of communism, the growing so-called Red-Green alliance should snap them into a hard reality. You will increasingly notice almost indistinguishable messages from socialists like James Talarico, Democratic candidate for the Senate in Texas, and Abdul El-Sayed, the radical Democratic Senate candidate in Michigan allegedly tied to the Muslim Brotherhood, though he denies it. They have a common enemy, Donald Trump, and share the desire to tear down the foundations of the American republic and replace it with a heavy-handed central authority granted greatly expanded powers to control our lives. It is the ultimate marriage of convenience for those on the far-left fringes of society.

Of course, once they get beyond joining forces to win an election, what happens when, for example, socialists take it to the limit to protect the rights of women, homosexuals, and transgenders, anathema to Muslims who despise the decadence of Western society, and many of whom support an Iranian regime that routinely puts at least some of these people to death? Neither side has demonstrated an appetite for compromise, so sparks will inevitably fly, and glaring schisms will develop on the far left. But that is a discussion for another day.

For those trying to draw distinctions between socialism and communism, consider the words of the founding father of the Soviet Union, Vladimir Lenin, who stated that the reason for socialism is communism, that socialism is a lower or transitional stage of development that eventually leads to communism. He called socialism a stepping stone where the state controls the means of production, with the ultimate aim of creating a stateless, classless communist society. Do you believe the likes of Mamdani, El-Sayed, Bernie Sanders, and the avowed socialists who won multiple primaries this year would disavow such aims?

Never before has socialism risen to its current level of acceptance and even embrace in one of the country’s two major political parties. The sugar high of price and rent controls, taxing the hell out of the most productive among us, free healthcare, and the rest of the delights of the welfare state awaits long-suffering Americans too ignorant or impulsive to understand the consequences of such stolen largesse built on the backs of productive citizens.

Pollsters Beware

We have now learned of at least one polling firm releasing completely fake surveys that were swallowed whole by elite media during this midterm campaign – which of course showed Democrats with leads in prominent races. Pollsters beware: It may not be the only such outfit generating false narratives out of whole cloth. It is not an uncommon belief that polls are designed not to reflect public opinion, but to influence it.

What we do know from the three elections where Donald Trump was on the ballot is that support for him has generally been undercounted by an average of about three points. And while Trump is not on the ballot, he is flying all over the country to place himself front and center in one state after another, and telling crowds to vote as if he is on the ballot. Of course, that is the ultimate double-edged sword. He wouldn’t want Democrats to pretend he’s on the ballot, would he?

We won’t know if this silver wave is a real thing until early voting tallies are compiled and all the votes are counted. But one way or another, aside from the typical polling inaccuracies and possibly irrational exuberance among leftists and their allies in the media, the last, best hope for Republicans trying to sidestep a blue wave is the eldest among them, those who remember what life was like under the threat of Soviet communism. We will soon know whether they will sit at home in expected numbers, or gin up sufficient enthusiasm to go to the polls and vote against the rising threat of a force most thought was long since discarded in the ash heap of history.

4 Questions

The story, in brief

1Why are some Republicans talking about a silver wave in the midterms?

The idea centers on older Americans, especially voters 65 and over, turning out with unusually high enthusiasm and backing Republican candidates in greater numbers than in recent years. Supporters of the theory argue these voters remember the threat and realities of communism and are especially motivated by concerns about socialism.

2What evidence does the article cite for a silver wave among older voters?

The piece points to voter enthusiasm surveys and comments from GOP pollster and strategist Matt Towery. Towery said voters ages 18 to 39 were about 30 points less enthusiastic about voting than voters 65 and older, and that older voters were going for Republicans in droves for the first time in three election cycles.

3Why does the article say socialism could affect the 2024 midterm election?

The article argues this midterm is different because socialism has gained unusual acceptance within one of the two major political parties. It says older voters who remember communism may react strongly against candidates and messages they see as socialist, making that issue a possible factor in turnout and voting behavior.

4What does the article say could determine if the silver wave is real?

It says the answer will not be clear until early voting tallies are compiled and all the votes are counted. The article adds that Republicans' best hope of limiting losses is strong turnout from older voters who are motivated to vote against what they see as a rising socialist threat.
