Although the impeachment case against President Donald Trump is vacuous, the Democrats and the media have succeeded in making it into something far more powerful than the facts of the case warrant. The reason is that Trump-supporters refuse to challenge the narrative. Instead, they allow their opponents to define the language and framing, thereby giving a massive advantage to the impeachers.
The Narrative
The unchallenged narrative goes as follows: Trump made a call to the Ukrainian president and bribed and threatened him to dig up dirt on a political opponent for personal gain. Fortunately, a whistleblower – a patriotic civil servant – came forth and revealed the truth to the American public.
At first, the Democrats referred to this scenario as quid pro quo, but after test polling likely voters in swing states, they changed the term to bribery.
While the Republicans have called this a “partisan sham,” they have entirely accepted both the language and the primary claim of the narrative, namely, that there is no reason to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden or the facts surrounding the DNC email server hacking, which allegedly originated from Ukraine.
They have entirely accepted that the leaker of the phone call was a whistleblower, acting honestly and patriotically. By swallowing these premises, a non-existent case against Trump has turned into an uncomfortably even match. No-one has ever won a war by only defending themselves. All wars end by attacking the enemy.
The Counternarrative
Here is an example of a counternarrative: Trump made a call to the Ukrainian president to do what he was elected to do, namely, to drain the swamp. It is a matter of national security to find out whether enemies of America have dirt on a potential future president that can be used for blackmail, making him beholden to a foreign nation.
Also, it is of paramount importance to investigate the ongoing Deep State coup that started with the Mueller hoax.
The enemy within became so afraid that Trump was getting closer to finding evidence of treason that they launched another coup attempt. A Deep State operative colluded with the Democrats and publicly leaked information from a confidential phone call between world leaders, thereby undermining the presidency and forever weakening international trust in the United States.
No foreign head of state can ever again talk to a U.S. president in confidence without fearing that the conversation will be leaked by rogue elements. If any foreign country had done the same things as the Deep State operatives, America would have regarded it as an act of war.
Neutralizing the Impeachment Narrative
The above counternarrative would be described as inaccurate by many who oppose the president, even delusional. However, it is arguably a far more accurate description of reality than the narrative pushed by the Democrats, and it has the benefit of moving the war to their territory. They would have to retreat and turn to defense.
The word is a mighty sword, but it must be wielded to be effective. So far, conservatives have chosen not to do so. The question is: Will they ever learn?
