Well, the establishment media is at it again.
This time, their hysterical pearl clutching is being directed at the Rob Porter story. When the news first broke about Porter’s alleged incidents of domestic violence, they couldn’t wait to make the situation seem like the second coming of Watergate.
They just couldn’t resist. Unfortunately for them, this story highlights the reasons why so many Americans no longer trust them.
The Revelations About Rob Porter
Last week, Rob Porter submitted his resignation amid accusations of domestic violence. His two former spouses alleged that the former Trump aide was emotionally and physically abusive. His second wife had filed a police report against Porter after he punched a glass door. The allegations prevented the F.B.I. from giving Porter security clearance.
At some point in January of 2017, Porter discussed the allegations with White House counsel Donald McGahn. In the conversation, Porter denied the accusations. Later in the year, the F.B.I. informed John Kelly that Porter would not receive security clearance.
After the Daily Mail published the story about the allegations against Porter, Kelly defended him saying, “Rob Porter is a man of true integrity and honor, and I can’t say enough good things about him.” Other members of the Trump administration also came to Porter’s defense.
Then, the photo surfaced. One of Porter’s former wives put out a picture of her with a black eye that Porter allegedly gave her. After the release of the photo, Kelly began distancing himself from the former aide. According to White House Deputy Press Secretary Raj Shah, Kelly was “fully aware” of the allegations against Porter.
It appears that Porter may have downplayed the severity of the allegations when he spoke with the chief of staff previously. “We all became aware of the news reports that emerged Wednesday morning and the graphic images,” Shah said.
Kelly released a statement addressing the situation. “There is no place for domestic violence in our society,” he wrote. “I stand by my previous comments of the Rob Porter that I have come to know since becoming Chief of Staff, and believe every individual deserves the right to defend their reputation.”
Last Friday, the president spoke up about the story. “We found out about it recently and I was surprised by it, but we certainly wish him well, and it’s obviously a tough time for you,” he said. “Now, he also, as you probably know, he says he’s innocent, and I think you have to remember that. He said very strongly yesterday that he’s innocent.
On Saturday, he tweeted:
“Peoples lives are being shattered and destroyed by a mere allegation. Some are true and some are false. Some are old and some are new. There is no recovery for someone falsely accused – life and career are gone. Is there no such thing any longer as Due Process?”
Then, the media exploded.
The Left’s Over-The-Top Reaction To The “Scandal”
When the photo of Porter’s former wife was released, the left went into a frenzy. Left-wing media outlets characterized the situation with the former aide as a huge scandal that is rocking the White House. The New York Times published a piece entitled “Kelly Says He’s Willing to Resign as Abuse Scandal Roils White House.” Vox put out an article with the headline, “The Rob Porter scandal keeps getting worse for Trump’s White House.” Not to be outdone, Politico went into full hysteria mode with a piece entitled “Rob Porter Is a National Security Scandal, Too.”
If you believe the coverage of the mainstream news outlets, you would assume that the Rob Porter issue is a scandal on par with Watergate. Left-wing pundits are using the story to suggest that the president is okay with domestic violence.
The Left’s Meltdowns Don’t Help Anyone
Okay, let’s face it. The White House hiring Rob Porter was a mistake. Not looking deeper into the allegations against the former aide was a misstep — but it’s not a scandal.
The left’s tendency to blow every single story about Trump out of proportion doesn’t help anyone — including them. When the left-wing media go to DefCon 5 every time the president scratches his nose, it only exposes their bias — and repulses regular Americans. Indeed, many of Trump’s supporters rejected the left because of this type of behavior.
The media would be better served by doing their job: reporting the facts. Instead, they choose to use their platform to further their political agenda — and they haven’t been very good at it lately. In the end, the media’s handling of this story is yet another example of why the left isn’t winning.
