Did you know FBI agents have already interviewed Christine Blasey Ford, at length, about the crimes against her? You may be forgiven for not knowing this, as it has not exactly been shouted from the rooftops by those who oppose Judge Kavanaugh’s SCOTUS nomination.
Since September 13, all the Judiciary Committee Democrats have sung the same tune – delay, delay, delay. Well, that’s not entirely true – the Democrats have actually been calling for a delay in the confirmation literally since the day Justice Kennedy announced his retirement. But this more recent call for postponement is vitally important.
All they wanted is for the FBI to interview the woman who has accused Brett Kavanaugh of attempted rape. Is that too much to ask? Well, she was interviewed, and for several hours. Not about any attack by Kavanaugh though. No, there has been and continues to be no reported crime involving him. What happened was that Christine Blasey Ford reported online death threats against her, and you know what, when a crime victim reported a crime, they investigated it.
The Unexamined Interviews
We know about the FBI interview not because the Trump administration or anyone in FBI leaked it – nope, they have not leaked Ms. Ford’s information. We certainly don’t know about it from reporting by The Washington Post or CNN, the two news outlets favored to receive information from, and become storytellers for, the accuser. We know about it because Ford’s lawyer used the length and intensity of the interview as one of many excuses as to why she and her client could not give a timely response to another attempt by the Judiciary Committee to arrange for her to testify before them.
Is it any wonder so many are skeptical about these allegations? Every single communication has been for delays and more delays. Even now, while so many news organizations are reporting that the hearing date and time is set for Thursday the 27, at 10 a.m., Ford and her lawyers seem to have still more opportunities to delay the proceedings over agreements about whether Kavanaugh should be examined first, and whether persons other than Senators could ask questions. Let’s take a look at those two points to examine how transparently political Ford and her attorney Debra Katz are.
Taking Turns?
Katz demands that Kavanaugh testify first, and then Ford. Hmmm. And then? Oh, and then, Kavanaugh would not be allowed to testify again. Can you imagine such a system? Well, you need not – that’s how they did it in the Inquisition. Here’s the dean of the civil rights bar Alan Dershowitz:
“The one thing there should be no compromise on, and every civil libertarian and every Democrat should demand – she must go first! You know, the tool of the Inquisition was to always call the accused to testify first.”
You’ll have to forgive Professor Dershowitz, he is an old man, and for most of his life, he could rely on some statistically significant percentage of the left to support notions of individual liberty now so well trampled in the age of social justice.
That’s small potatoes compared to who is asking the questions. In what seems to be the first time it would happen since the gavel dropped on April 6, 1789, during the very first Senate session, Ford and Katz want Katz and any other lawyer on their team to be able to question Kavanaugh. The point of the hearings is for Senators to elicit testimony from witnesses, not for attorneys of witnesses to ask other witnesses questions!
Fly in the Soup
That’s not the worst of it – Ford wants to be victimized by the committee. Part of the joy across the Democrats’ landscape is the thought of the old white men of the committee questioning this victim survivor. They can’t wait for the visuals and the soundbites for the election commercials and fundraising letters are already written. Republicans have been talking about using their own attorney to conduct their questioning of Ms. Ford. This would be a female attorney with experience in questioning those who allege sexual attacks, without re-victimizing the survivor. That would surely put a fly in the Democrats’ soup, so it cannot be allowed.
If Republicans question her themselves, they are a bunch of sexist jerks committing another atrocity. If they hire the job out to a woman who plays well on TV, Democrats are losing votes and money and a cudgel with which to beat Republicans with for a generation.
We were told no decision has been made on this important issue, even though various senators have been dismissive of her account and should have to shoulder their responsibility to ask her questions.
That stunning quote is from “attorneys for Ford.” They are quite happy to see their client be re-victimized or at least handled in a ham-handed way, by Republicans. They demand it and couch that demand for Republicans to damage themselves politically, as a responsibility somehow. No doubt can be left in the mind of a neutral observer – regardless of what happened or not to Ms. Ford at the hands of Kavanaugh, what is happening now is by her design, and drawn with the purpose of bestowing political benefits to Democrats and punishing Republicans. She is Christ whose sacrifice must be completed.
Any other demands should be summarily rejected. They should be peremptorily rejected now, with a full list of all accommodations made public.
Witness Denial
On Sunday, September 16, Ms. Ford stated to reporters that Kavanaugh attempted to rape her at a small party. All four people that Ms. Ford says were there have now given sworn statements or assertions that they do not know what she is talking about, and remember no party. One of them is the ex-wife of Bob Beckel, a prominent Democrat. Leland Keyser (formerly Beckel) is identified as a lifelong friend of Ms. Ford who says that not only does she not remember the party, she has never met Brett Kavanaugh. Any of these people found to be lying will face legal consequences.
Ms. Ford is the only one who hasn’t talked, except to The Washington Post and her Democrat handlers, a redundant audience. When she reported crimes, they were investigated. She could do so again right now, and, if she’s interested in justice over big midterm gains for Dems, she will stop the games and say her piece. But don’t bet on it.
