Outgoing special counsel Jack Smith has requested that all charges relating.to president-elect Donald Trump’s alleged attempts to interfere in the 2020 election be dropped. Following Trump’s emphatic 2024 election win, Smith indicated that he would be winding down the two cases he was pursuing against the incoming president.
The other case was related to Trump’s supposed mishandling of classified government documents.
Judge Tanya Chutkan will have to approve Smith’s request before the charges are officially dropped. The election interference case had already essentially been put on ice after the special counsel moved to vacate all deadlines relating to the legal proceedings.
