For deep-pocketed Democrat dark money backers, the logic is simple: If you absolutely cannot get a blue candidate elected in an overwhelmingly red domain, the next best option is to help get a Republican more agreeable to you installed instead. This is precisely what happened in Wyoming this summer, a GOP state representative asserted.
In a compellingly documented op-ed for The Federalist on Oct. 6, state Rep. Tomi Strock explained how out-of-state Democrat-networked financing tied to, but not exclusive to, notorious globalist progressive billionaire George Soros flooded the zone in a Republican-controlled Western state. It was designed to defeat a so-called “hard right” Freedom Caucus faction that had won control of the legislature and proceeded to implement an agenda anathema to establishment political norms.
“In a red state like Wyoming, the vast majority of political races are decided in the Republican primary, as few Democrats run in the November general. Instead, liberals often run as Republicans and get supporters to infiltrate the Republican primary at the polls to vote for them,” Strock wrote. “In the Aug. 18 Republican primary, Democrats and left-wing groups celebrated the ouster of more than two dozen conservative Republicans from the state legislature.”
The outcome was labeled a “near-total massacre” by local paper The Cowboy State Daily.
NYT’s ‘More Mainstream Conservative Republicans’ Vanquish ‘Ultraconservatives’
Strock, in her piece, cited examples of progressives rejoicing at the results of a Republican primary. An over-the-top supposedly straight news Aug. 19 report from progressive establishment media behemoth The New York Times is even more telling. Wyoming’s Freedom Caucus members were classified as “ultraconservatives” in the second word of the article by The Times’ “National Correspondent” David W. Chen and framed throughout as a fringe extremist “hard right” bloc that had thankfully been quickly toppled from power by “more mainstream conservative Republicans.”
Ah, yes. The type of conservative officially approved by The New York Times. That is what Republican voters are clamoring for. It’s uncanny how ardently the progressive left ceaselessly supports this particular breed of elephant within red party ranks. It’s almost as if it doesn’t see it as a genuine threat to its goals and ambitions. Make no mistake, however. The Wyoming Freedom Caucus has been clearly identified as a menace to be eradicated.
Follow the Wyoming Money Trail
“The little-known, well-funded Wyoming Donor Alliance (WDA) publicly set out to ‘break the Freedom Caucus’ majority’ in March, and national money helped finance the organization,” Strock related. “North Carolina-based State Leadership Project gave WDA $100,000; Western Futures Fund gave it $75,000; and [Washington] DC-based Sixteen Thirty Fund gave $50,000 directly to WDA under its former name, Wyoming Investor Network, according to 2024 tax records.”
This is the Democrat dark money machine funded to such a large degree by Soros. As Strock noted:
“And the money flowing through State Leadership Project reaches even further upstream.
“George Soros’ Open Society network provided substantial funding to the left-wing Tides Foundation, which has given State Leadership Project more than $1.1 million since 2020, including $807,800 in 2024 alone. IRS-derived grant records show Soros’ Open Society foundation gave roughly $20 million to the Tides Foundation between 2016 and 2022, according to Anti-Defamation League, with millions more flowing to Tides Foundation and other Tides entities in subsequent years.”
If you can’t crush it outside the Republican Party, it must be crushed within the Republican Party.
The Wyoming Donor Alliance “published a 20-page full-color strategy booklet titled ‘Break the Freedom Caucus Majority: A Coalition Strategy for 2026,’” columnist Jonathan Lange wrote Sept. 26 in The Cowboy State Daily.
“The WDA planned a $1.5 million budget to ‘Launch an Unprecedented Independent Expenditure (IE) Campaign’ between May 10 and Aug. 18, 2026,” he continued. There’s a thread here that needs to be followed all the way down the line.
“The WDA supplied the entire $455,000 budget for the newly created Political Action Committee for a Better Wyoming,” Lange stated. “It also gave $30,000 to its sister, Better Wyoming Action and Research, which is led by the husband of Democratic Rep. Karlee Provenza. You might remember Better Wyoming A&R for its football-themed Facebook ads to defeat the Freedom Caucus.
“Better Wyoming, in turn, receives about a quarter-million dollars per year from the George B. Storer Foundation – a multi-million-dollar funding stream for a who’s who of progressive causes. Liz Storer, another Democratic representative in Wyoming’s House, is its President and CEO.”
Lange concluded, “Wyoming Democrat politicians have fingerprints all over the money that flooded Wyoming’s Republican primaries.”
All Politics Is Not Local Anymore
Why target little (in terms of national political power) Wyoming like this? Because it had the gall to challenge decades-long governing norms.
“As state legislatures around the country prepare to convene next month, Wyoming is wading into uncharted political waters: For the first time anywhere in the country, the hard-right Freedom Caucus has won control of a State House,” The New York Times alarmingly reported in 2024 after the caucus’ victory.

“Their agenda, known as the Five and Dime Plan, aims to immediately tighten election rules, invalidate drivers’ licenses issued to [illegal aliens] by other states, prohibit college diversity initiatives, prohibit the state from considering environmental concerns when making investment decisions and reduce property taxes,” the paper wrote, detailing the crazed “ultraconservative” (yes, NYT used that word here again, waiting until the second sentence this time) agenda of these foaming-at-the-mouth zealots.
This should not be allowed to stand. And thus Wyomingites have learned the new political reality of modern America. The old saw “all politics is local” has been completely turned on its head in an era when one man alone (Soros) can spend more than $100 million on the 2026 midterm elections.
“Whether you like it, or not, Wyoming has become a global battleground,” columnist Lange succinctly put it. The message applies to all 50 states and every city and town within them.
