Covington Catholics — Victims of a Fake News Frenzy

A group of Covington Catholic High School students experienced the nightmare of the fake news media turning them into the villains of an invented story. Their crime? Walking while white, Christian, male, and wearing a MAGA hat.

The Narrative

It was widely reported that young Trump supporters taunted and harassed a Native American war veteran, shouting “build that wall” and using racial slurs. The usual suspects on the left went into a rage. Author Reza Aslan tweeted a picture of one of the students smiling in front of the Native American drummer, commenting, “Honest question. Have you ever seen a more punchable face than this kid’s?”

Comedian Kathy Griffin encouraged her far left audience to find the names and home addresses of the students and publicly shame them.

In a video statement, Sam Schroder, a senior at Covington, said, “There have been many threats against our lives, against our parents. Some of these include that we should be locked in the school, and it should be burned to the ground, the school being bombed, school shooting threats.”

There was a large problem with the media narrative. It was worse than a mere lie. The true victims in this unfortunate event were the students, framed for something that was done to them.

What Really Happened

When more extended video of the event emerged, it became clear what had happened. The students, who had attended the annual March for Life rally in Washington, D.C., were waiting for the bus to bring them home to Kentucky. Then members of the Black Hebrew Israelites sect started shouting at the boys, using racial slurs and hateful homosexual terms. A black student was called the N-word and told he would be used for organ harvesting. In the face of the unprovoked vitriol, the students asked their teacher if they could chant the school slogan to drown out the hate speech emanating from the Black Hebrew Israelites. The slogan contains only positive words and affirmations common in school cheers all over America. Specifically, it does not contain the phrase “build the wall.”

During their chant, a group of Native American political activists, singing and drumming, injected themselves into the group of students. One of the students stood still and smiled to show that the group had no ill will and no intention to escalate the situation. This mature and responsible behavior was later reported in the fake news media as “taunting” and “harassment.”

The Response

Thanks to the overwhelming video evidence, the media to some degree rolled back their initial fake news story, but most have not made a full retraction. There is much to learn from what happened.

First, when the story broke, some conservatives were more than willing to throw these innocent kids under the bus. This reveals a knee-jerk tendency that infects too many decent people on the right, who are not willing to assess such situations calmly and defend their own when it’s clear the accusations are vicious slander.

Second, not reported widely in the news was a much bigger story. At least 100,000 and perhaps as many as 200,000-300,000 people gathered in D.C. to participate in the March for Life, a pro-life rally. Rather than focusing on the crucially important national conversation about abortion, the media chose to talk about Catholic students wearing MAGA hats and Baby Hitler.

The only major stories in the mainstream media about the rally were highly negative, evidence that  Americans desperately need alternative news sources. Here at Liberty Nation, truth is making a comeback. Stay tuned for more truth ignored by the fake news legacy media.
