Comrade No More – AOC Betrays the Left for Political Power

In a stunning, unpredictable move, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez breaks with her Democratic-Socialist overlords in the pursuit of political power.

Each week Liberty Nation straps on its Personal Protective Equipment and dives into the TwitterZone to bring you the biggest news, the most outlandish arguments, and the real Zeitgeist of what is taking place in the internet’s wildest frontier.

This week, Twitter turned its leery eyes toward one of its own in its usual pursuit of political drama. This week’s bombshell came from none other than rabble-rousing New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). In a recently released interview with the Democratic Socialists of America’s magazine, Democratic Left, Ocasio-Cortez shocked ardent socialists, democratic-socialists, and progressives throughout the nation in her defense of the mainstream Democratic Party’s status and future. Like many socialist and progressive citizens, Ocasio-Cortez has constantly questioned the Democratic Party’s commitment to the working class in the past. For the DSA’s first official interview with the current movement’s ideological representative, many expected Ocasio-Cortez to critique the Democratic Party from a left-wing point of view as she has done in the past. Instead, Ocasio-Cortez gave a performance that activists on Twitter have used as evidence of her shift to a class traitor and opportunist playing defense for the Democratic Party.

Throughout the interview with Democratic Left, Ocasio-Cortez was given multiple leading questions that were clearly set up to critique the Democratic Party, who many socialists and progressives deem too right-wing, capitalist, and neoliberal for their tastes. Ocasio-Cortez shockingly called these perceptions “privileged” and declared that these “bad-faith actors” from the left-wing would destroy the momentum Democrats have built up. Her ardent defense for the Biden administration, despite its continued deportations and detainments of tens of thousands of Central Americans, seemed to be the most problematic opinion for the left.

On Twitter, prominent socialists and communists with red roses and hammer and sickles in their names were in frenzy over the bombshell reports about this interview. They reanalyzed her history of pro-business sentiment during her time at Boston University, reposted videos detailing her recruitment to the DSA as a political mouthpiece at the urging of her brother, and decried her abandonment of the left-wing movement in the United States as proof of Democratic astroturfing in left-wing communities. The angry responses have become difficult to ignore. Still, supporters of establishment Democrats have already done their best to throw support behind Ocasio-Cortez on social media, who was threatening to push for expansive primary challenges against prominent members of the Democratic Party just a year ago. As many of them recalled, Ocasio-Cortez had claimed to support the primary tenets of democratic socialism even at the DNC. This betrayal from the progressive left’s political darling and spokeswoman has threatened to set the socialist movement in America back to square one.

The political reality of Ocasio-Cortez’s all-out defense of the Biden Administration is clear, but her long-term goals are not. She could have been tired of the political infighting from her presence, or perhaps she has been promised an influential career in establishment Democratic politics contingent on her allegiance to the mainstream factions of the party. Others have already begun to speculate that her latest actions were performed with the goal of a Senate or even presidential run in the future, which would undoubtedly require immense political capital and the backing of her party.

Despite the apparent betrayal of her peers, Ocasio-Cortez will surely find herself welcome in the Democratic Party’s arms. The party’s obsession with identity politics and ethnic diversity will benefit from her presence, despite her penchant for ideological purity tests in the realm of economics. Only time will tell whether Ocasio-Cortez has sold out for good or if this is nothing more than an occasion of political opportunism that will fade with time.
