Update: Initial reports suggested a vehicle packed with explosives had been targeted but an official has now clarified that “multiple bombers” wearing explosive vests were hit by the drone.
U.S. forces conducted a drone strike in Kabul on Sunday, targeting a vehicle suspected of being about to carry out an ISIS-K suicide attack. The U.S. embassy in Kabul had earlier warned of an imminent attack on the international airport and had advised Americans to immediately leave the area.
Following the drone strike, U.S. Central Command issued a statement, saying, “We are confident we successfully hit the target.” The statement went on, “Significant secondary explosions from the vehicle indicated the presence of a substantial amount of explosive material. We are assessing the possibilities of civilian casualties, though we have no indications at this time.”
