On Sunday November 1, the White House announced that Joe Biden has signed a pardon for his son, Hunter. The younger Biden, who has been at the center of a major family corruption scandal, had felony convictions relating to gun and tax charges.
In June of 2024, Hunter Biden was convicted on three felony firearms charges. Both before and after the guilty verdicts came in on all three counts, Joe Biden asserted that he would not pardon his son, stating on one occasion following the conviction, “I will abide by the jury's decision.”
Later in the year, after his father was forced by Democratic Party elders to abandon his reelection campaign, Hunter faced another trial in Los Angeles for failure to pay some $1.4 million in taxes. Before that trial began, Hunter Biden entered a guilty plea.
In a statement, the outgoing chief executive wrote, "Today, I signed a pardon for my son Hunter, From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted."
