Tuesday, June 20, 2023, David Weiss, the U.S. Attorney for Delaware, disclosed a plea deal with Hunter Biden for tax evasion and a gun charge. Weiss, a Trump appointee, sent a letter to the federal court discussing the terms. Weiss and Hunter Biden’s defense attorney ask for a hearing for judicial approval and to enter the plea. Mr. Hunter Biden will plead guilty to the federal crimes of tax evasion and possessing a firearm by a prohibited person.
The president’s son will not go to prison for his federal crimes. Mr. Biden will plead guilty to not paying taxes for two years, in 2017 and 2018. Widely published estimates suggest he shorted the treasury on payments for 1.2 million dollars in income. The gun crime has to do with his drug addiction and gun possession. According to Weiss’ letter, Biden will enter a “Pretrial Diversion Agreement” for the firearm charge. Legacy media outlets have reported leaks from Mr. Weiss’ office that prosecutors plan to recommend a probation sentence only for the tax charges.
The letter asks the U.S. District Court for a hearing to enter the plea and fix the sentence.
