Harry Potter Goes for Woke
Famed Harry Potter author JK Rowling has stepped once again into a great big steaming pile of gender trouble. She reacted to a headline using the phrase “people who menstruate,” saying – quite sarcastically – that there used to be a word for that … “Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?” Of course, “women are not defined by their periods,” and the left let her have it.
Liberty Nation’s Jeff Charles wrote:
“As you might have suspected, far-left progressives swarmed this tweet like Dementors attacking Hogwarts. High-profile leftists and corporate media outlets excoriated the author, labeling her as, among other things, a TERF (Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist). The Sun newspaper even went so far as to interview Rowling’s ex-husband, who had violently abused her. He was quoted as saying: “I’m not sorry” for slapping her.
Members of the cast of the Harry Potter movies, including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint have also publicly criticized Rowling for her comments.”
This isn’t the author’s first run-in with the transgender crowd, but this time she really got it. Not only was her tweet “hurtful” to “men who menstruate,” but also to all the women in the world who no longer menstruate.
What to Watch For
JK Rowling has caved under the pressure of backlash before, but she stood her ground this time. Expect the cancel culture crowd to ramp up the pressure and for many “woke” companies to react. Just how many will choose pandering over profit remains to be seen.
The Woke Business Strategy
Being “woke” is big business. Capitalizing on the latest outrage movement can mean a lot of free press for corporations willing to take advantage of any advertising opportunity that comes along, but it’s a gamble. What happens when the latest bandwagon loses a wheel and is abandoned for the next best thing?
Liberty Nation’s Sarah Cowgill explained the trend:
“America has the attention span of the common housefly when a newer, shinier, or scarier object comes along. Three weeks ago, folks spent hours fighting on social media about wearing masks and sheltering in place. Those same people now are in the streets, in close proximity, and no one is worried about the bug that shut down the world’s most vibrant economy.
Those folks – bless their hearts – aren’t worried about the national debt, impeaching the president, voter fraud, climate change, or that Betsy DeVos is the Secretary of Education. No one cares that the #MeToo movement is all but a distant memory. And corporate America is in full Carpe Diem mode, appeasing the consumer and attempting to look woke. Well played, billionaires, well played.”
What to Watch For
As the outrage flavor of the week continues to change, rest assured that corporate pandering will remain a constant. What will be the next cause du jour? Who can say?

- In further gender-related news, Orange Is The New Black and Billions star Asia Kate Dillon has called for award shows to remove gender-specific acting categories, starting with the Screen Actors Guild. Dillon was the first nonbinary performer to play a nonbinary character in mainstream TV history, so should this person (see how awkward it is to write about someone with uncertain pronouns?) were to win or be nominated for such an award, it might be problematic. Will the Guild capitulate?
