TheTwitterZone: Legacy Media Carry Poisoned Water for Social Media

A teen's immature actions from the past posted on Twitter crush her college plans.

Each week Liberty Nation straps on its Personal Protective Equipment and dives into the TwitterZone to bring you the biggest news, the most outlandish arguments, and the real Zeitgeist of what is taking place in the internet’s wildest frontier.

Jimmy Galligan and Mimi Groves

Jimmy Galligan and Mimi Groves

While Twitter was buzzing all week about the stimulus-relief package, a heinous piece put out by the New York Times was published and posted on social media. The article, typical of the ones that trend in woke leftist circles on Twitter, was fresh from the race-baiting cesspool. It involved a teenage girl, Mimi Groves, who had her college admission rescinded because of a video of her saying a racial slur on camera three years ago made its rounds on social media. Par for the course, any criticism of this pseudo-hit piece was characterized as an attack on the freedom of the press.

It was evident the writer felt minimal pity for Groves, who has seen her future plans unravel because of a tasteless comment made years ago. The article instead chose to make a hero out of Jimmy Galligan, the biracial classmate of Groves who posted the video and who is comfortably presented as the intersectional protagonist. In an ironic twist, the video’s circulation arose after Groves had posted a message on social media in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Woke Twitter immediately jumped at the chance to chastise a hypocritical white girl getting her just deserts. However, some adults in the room pointed out the insanity of holding 15-year-old girls to the standards of today’s woke society.

According to the article, Galligan intentionally waited until Groves had been accepted into the University of Tennessee to repost the three-year-old Snapchat video showing Groves in her car uttering the slur to a friend. The article feigns nuance but ultimately reveals the writer’s intentions by arguing that racists in school had never been held accountable until now. If this were the case, why wait three years? Even the writer’s characterization of Groves as a wealthy white girl who lives in a gated community fails to mention Galligan’s similarly privileged background.

In our current political climate, Woke Twitter picks the winners and losers, with no problem placing targets on the backs of teens for immature behavior in the past. And nowadays even losers can work their way back into the charmed circle if they have the right credentials. Case in point, former Democratic Senator Al Franken of Minnesota. During the rise of the #MeToo movement,  he was credibly accused of sexual harassment and was hounded out of the Senate in disgrace by woke members of his own party. But now, left-wing Democrats on Twitter are attempting to rescue Franken. This social-media rehabilitation has been embraced by media outlets like CNN, MSNBC, The New Yorker, and even late-night television shows. All have shown their willingness to let an infamous predator politician back into the spotlight based on his previous status as a progressive darling.

It is disturbing that mainstream media outlets are more and more complicit in promoting social media’s whims and attacks, taking their cues from Facebook and Twitter. Vengeful, hate-driven radicals on social media now generate headlines, giving more oxygen to the corrosive cancel culture that infects our society.
