Despite the sourpuss face of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and her comrades in white, President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address was a success and brought to the stage a plethora of juicy tidbits to entertain those seeking a brief distraction from the political chaos. As attendees were announced and congratulated – as they walked down the aisles to take their seats -the camera panned the room, and the eye could not help but be drawn to the field of white taking up a section of the gallery.
Those who dared to wear white after Labor Day were entirely from the Democratic delegation. For the last few years, these ladies have taken to wearing this angelic color to show support for other women – save those like Juanita Broadderick. Ironic then, that when the president said, “Last year women filled 72% of all jobs added,” not a single one of them clapped for their fellow females.
Missing this year was media darling Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). AOC announced on Twitter her personal boycott: “After much deliberation, I have decided that I will not use my presence at a state ceremony to normalize Trump’s lawless conduct & subversion of the Constitution.” Perhaps she didn’t have a new white outfit or didn’t want to wear the one she donned while touring the “American immigration concentration camps.”
As the president was introduced and strolled down the walkway, greeting people and shaking hands, a couple of the white suits stood watching – or, rather, frowning – while others clapped and applauded. One enterprising member of Congress happened to remember the very mature antics of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) – a mocking clap at Trump during the 2019 State of the Union – and decided to parrot that action.

First Lady Melania Trump did not cater to the grumpy, white-garbed women, choosing, instead, a smart black dress suit. Displaying her signature gentle grace, Melania let her elegance and charm completely outshine the crotchety left side of the aisle. It was she who draped the Presidential Medal of Freedom around a stunned Rush Limbaugh’s neck. A giant of talk radio, Limbaugh recently revealed he had been diagnosed with advanced-stage lung cancer.
Pelosi could not sit still for more than a few seconds, constantly licking and chewing on her lips as if she had coated them with rum-flavored lipstick. If she wasn’t shuffling papers or mumbling to herself, she was busy shaking her head at the president’s speech. Her feelings toward Trump couldn’t have been more obvious – the impeachment notwithstanding – and like a spoiled child denied her favorite lollipop, the Speaker pouted in a manner unbecoming a person in her position.
Of course, the coup de grace – a display of jaw-dropping petulance – was the speaker’s tearing up of her copy of the presidential address almost before Trump had finished speaking. Really, Nancy? Any future complaints from her about the president’s supposed incivility will ring decidedly hollow.
