Justice Alito moved up the deadline for this filing from Pennsylvania authorities. While he didn't elaborate on the motivation for the change, the previous deadline would have made it impossible for the court to rule before December 8 - the so-called "safe harbor" date. Under the Electoral Count Act, elections settled by this date will be treated as presumptively valid by Congress.
